Hey this is Hugo at Expert Village. This section is on dogs as it pertains to quail hunting
and dove hunting. Now, dogs are great companions when you are out in the field. For quail and
dove it is great to have a dog along with you. Quail hunting uses dogs and basically
they search out the game for you. So, if you are hunting down a road or in a fence line
or whatever. In a field your dogs will basically do the work for you in locating the coveys
of quail. What they will do; a well trained dog will search out and point when they get
to a covey. You walk up and you shoot it and hopefully you knock the quail down and the
dog goes and retrieves it and brings it back to you. Then you do the whole process again.
It's wonderful to see dogs work. A lot of people make their living training dogs. It's
a wonderful, wonderful time to just see the dogs in action and just have them part of
your hunting group. For dove hunting it's a little bit different. You will have a retriever,
a dog that retrieves for you, who sits next to you and as you shoot the dove and they
fall your dog will go and pick up that dove and bring it back to you. That can save you
a lot of wear and tear in running back and forth to pick up the dove that you knocked
down. Dogs have a great sense of smell so they are able to locate the game. That's the
use of dogs; again they are great companions when you are hunting dove or quail. If you
haven't hunted with them make sure you do so in the near future.
