The Board of the San Diego Convention Center Corporation
voted this morning unanimously
to award a contract to design the Phase Three Convention Center expansion to the design team of Fentress
Architects John Portman,
the associates and Civitas.
The team's design which we're unveiling today for the first time
builds on the success of our iconic facility
by embracing the waterfront location with the new five-acre park
and rooftop
performance venue
while delivering an expanded facility that will help drive our regional economy,
generate jobs and build on our reputation as a world-class convention and meeting
destination.
As everyone knows by now our convention center is a giant economic generator for the region.
For every dollar invested in it
it returns $2.36 in tax revenues
It produces about thirty million dollars a year
in revenues for our city
and it supports about twelve thousand jobs across the region.
With an expanded center
we'll increase our ability to retain the conventions that soon will outgrow the facility
and attract newer larger ones.
When complete
San Diego will have a 750,000 square foot contiguous exhibit hall
the largest exhibit hall in the western coast.
In addition, the public amenities Fentress has included are nothing short of spectacular.
Including a new urban playground
on top of the convention center's roof
while at the same time there's a vision for an energized waterfront
that both convention attendees and San Diegans can use. Also the center's economic
impact
is expected to jump up by about an additional six hundred
ninety eight million dollars.
It's also expected to
create hundreds of construction jobs
and nearly seven thousand new permanent jobs
yes
an opportunity that has been long in the planning
on that's been worth the wait
you can see by this proposal on this design
the the Fed was opportune disconnect bring to increase park space right there on the
waterfront
designed just five acres of new park an oppressive rooftop and of course
wonderful beautiful day it's of San diego
the fence first design embraces much of our existing architecture
building on the convention center is a chronic role in our cities
thailand waterfront
they're designed
needs all of our key concerns first among these is respect for the community
and respect for the environment
and our waterfront
we engage community stakeholders every step of the way and this process in addition to
the eleven meetings we've talked about that the mirror
there's task force
conducted
we hosted to public workshops in June of this year
or we simply listen to the public
talk about their expectations for this project
this is a a video preview of of what the prom in on you like in the future with the retail
and then the convention center expansion
the building faces is about ninety feet from the water's edge
there's lots of room for pedestrians
lots of room for people
enjoy the waterfront
the retail withdraw people that will draw people of the proper time
the be very little traffic on convention way
the trucks that used to come up and down conventions convention way will now be routed inside the
building
we have a porch right as far as working with all of our partners and and our partners were
all represented up here today
I think everybody is already outlined all the benefits are going to happen to to the
to the community into San diego the world very pleased to be able be able to see a new
hotel come aboard of eventually and to see in improving of our waterfront
today is an important step
for a project that I believe also indians are going to be very very proud of and see
the benefits of
for decades to come
