This is in the middle of the Karakum Desert in Turkmenistan. You go off the road for about
two miles and suddenly behind a low hill you come to this massive hole in the ground which
has been burning for 40 years. That was looking at it from a distance, that was standing on
the brink. Then I did a much messier sketch when I got back home, thinking it through
larger and larger and it gradually expanded stage by stage until it got to that scale.
Having drawn a certain shape to the whole hole, whether the actual hole looks like that
I don't know because I haven't been able to go back and check but I've got lots of little
photos and bits of it. I then had to go and get a bag of sand and recreate what I'd drawn
and then try lighting it from underneath. That's me just trying to recreate the sides
of a large hole in the Karakum Desert in the middle of a warehouse. I was shining a light
under it and sketching the result.
