President Ramsey has directed the university and the physical plant
plant to be more sustainable in our operations.
And so one of the big pieces of that was single stream recycling.
So while we were researching single stream recycling, we also want to
maybe do something a little more like focusing on the amount of garbage
we take to the landfill and that’s where we came across the mini-bin.
We want to see how the operation works internally
before we roll it out campus wide.
We want to make sure we have all of the bugs worked out
and make sure we get some cheerleaders on our side
side that can say hey this little can is not that bad, in fact it’s really easy to use.
Some things that we can recycle now that we haven’t been able to in the past
are soda bottles, aluminum cans, all forms of paper
including news paper, magazines, catalogs, anything that tears can go into
the recycle bin. Some of the things that can’t go in
would be like a Kleenex that you would blow your nose into, any type of chip
wrapper that’s got a foil lining in it, Styrofoam at this time is not recyclable
here at the university.
So all of those things would be trash.
Since we started in February we’ve added over 34 buildings on the Belknap
campus, looking to expand to HSC and Shelby.
We receive a quarterly report from QRS that tells us how well we’re doing
and our first report stated that we had recycled over 12 tons of material
that we previously would not have recycled.
So we’ve been able to keep 12 tons of material out of the landfill.
