When working with zippers, you have the perfect foot and even a sewing machine that will help
you out. If you touch the home button and scroll all the way over and down to the dress
form, that is the Bernina Creative Consultant. We can tell it what type of fabric we're working
on. This is kind of just a lightweight cotton, so we'll leave it at the 1st one, the woven.
And then we can go over to the technique of a zipper.
Now there's a reason I'm having us go through this in this way. Not only will it tell us
what stitch it needs, stitch 1. And what foot, stitch 4, your zipper foot. Pressure, if it
needs to be adjusted it will have a different number for you. Remember, pressure is right
over here on the side of your machine. And tension is reduced to 3 just for a little
bit ease of guiding. Now when you touch okay, watch what happens. The straight stitch is
picked. The needle position is put over to the far left side, which is what you need
to do when you sew a zipper. Otherwise you'd sit the needle right on the foot and break
the needle. And the stitch length has been increased for us just nicely.
So we're going to take our fabric and with our right side up and our zipper right side
down, you put that right along the edge, or based on the pattern you're working with.
And the foot is going to ride right next to the zipper teeth. Now I always like using
a zipper that's longer than what we need it to be for. So this is something that is- then
I'm never running up against the teeth at the beginning or the pole on the zipper. So
it's really quite easy.
Now what we're going to do is I'll just stitch down a ways on this fabric. I'm just keeping
the zipper teeth kind of hugged right up against the foot as the needle stitching nice and
close to it without any worries. Now once I reach the lower edge I would go to the iron
and press this open. By pressing it open it really lets the fabric lay perfectly and open
next to the zipper teeth.
Now oftentimes I'll just put this in the same way but now we need the needle back on the
other side. So this time I'll manually take the needle to the far right of our foot. And
then we'll do the top stitching down. Sometimes what I'll do is take a few stitches because
my thread doesn't really know where to go. So I'll just clip that out. And then I don't
have to worry about it. And then all I'm doing is really just keeping an eye on staying nice,
and straight, and even next to my fabric that I'm working with.
And really the other side is done just the same way. Flip your fabric over. Put your
zipper- I always sew with the zipper on top when I'm doing that. And then just continue
right on through. Let's take a look at what we're getting. How fun and easy is that? So
zippers shouldn't be really a hard thing, especially when you have the Bernina Creative
Consultant.
