Up before the sunrise,
poll workers are busy converting the garage in this San Diego home
into a polling location for the special mayoral election.
Well, we come here at 5:30 in the morning and we let the touchscreen inspector do their thing,
because their is very intricate work
and we set up the booths,
we set up the polling signs and then we start setting up the table.
But today's election is special for more than one reason.
Kimberly Bruce and her family have hosted a polling place at her grandmother's home
for more than forty years. My grandparents have been doing it for so
long that
we used to come up here and help them and
you just got interested. We didn't
get to do anything like the poll workers did but
we got to see what they were doing and it just got interesting so...
Bruce and her family have a lot of pride in their service during
San Diego elections. People have come to depend on them being here
for every election so its gonna really be different for them
since this is our last one. This very house has hosted a polling place
for
every single election in the city of San Diego since 1967.
After 46 years of service Miss Jonnie Lee Byrd has decided to retire
from her poll worker duties. The family took the a vote and we're like
you know it take her long or longer to recover after an election
so probably need to cut her off at 92.
Today, both city leaders family members recognized
Bruce's grandmother for her service to the community for the past forty years
For JMS Reports, this is Carla Romero.
