Ernie: Good evening and welcome to manor of speaking. When we're
going to be talking about downton abbey. So much went on
tonight, we want to hear about it. You can join us on facebook
at manor speak or manor of speaking, hashtag #mos, I have a
panel of wonderful friends with us in the studio. From houston
public radio, st. John flynn. And from kprc. Frank bimgz is
here. And the diva of all things delicious, cleverley stone. And
of course the always knowledgeable and lovely helen
mann is back with us. In just a few minutes we'll be joined by
rebecca eaton, the executive director of masterpiece. What
has been going on tonight? Here is our recap. Follow along. Rear
is the grantham gazette. -----♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪
sometimes it's hard to keep them down on the farm. Alfred takes a
test to train as a chef at the ritz but in the end is not
accepted. While alfred awaits his fate, carson considers
moseley. Moseley waffles a little too long carson's liking.
Baxter, this is your worst nightmare, why? We're not sure.
Thomas has something on baxter and wants him to be her spy.
Cora has to persuade miss patmor miss patmore to exchange the
icebox for a refrigerator. And anna visits the doctor. Uh oh.
The more things change the more they stay the same category,
thomas considers moving to the u.S. Downstairs bates is after
hannah for the truth and tells mrs. Hughes he'll resign if she
doesn't fess up. But surprise she does, saying it's a stranger
who broke in leading to bates and anna reconciling. Mrs. Bates
tells hughes she's happy it's resolved. But he makes it clear,
it's not. Watch out, mr. Groan! Mr. Green! Sends chills down my
spine. Before we go any further, we do have to get to our poll
question. Dowager, had some great lines. The poll question
is, what did kill lord byron? Was it a dual with a man whose
wife he was having an affair, b broke and destitute from a slum.
C, in germany or d. Broke. We'll get you the results at the end
of the show. What happened lord biron, where do we begin? You
were brought to tears tonight. [00:06:33] >> I was. I'm a big
fan of mr. Bates, ernie. >> Mr. Bates ernie? >> Mr. Bates, ernie
and when he told his wife he was aware of what happened to her
and he generalitily cupped her face in his hands, and said you
know, like don't worry, I love you today, forever. I just --
ah! Were you moved by that? >> Yeah. Wonderful. >> It's a very
touching moment but I'm much more intrigued by what's going
on between thomas and baxter. The back story of that. >> They
could be brother-sister. That could be his older sister. >>
Why would that be something held over her? >> Don't all brothers
have something on their sisters? >> My brother's got something on
me. So we'll just leave that one alone. St. John, thoughts? >>
Yes, I think what I loved about what you were saying cleverley,
mr. Bates was so tender with anna but you know that the other
side of him is going to come out. It's going to come out very
soon. >> That's what keeps me from being so moved by his
gentleness. Because I find that character so dark. To -- there's
something troubling to me about bates. >> It was scary at the
end, he simply scared me at the end. >> Nothing is over, nothing
is done with. You know that's a little creepy there. Then there
was poor alfred. Alfred's trying to get into cooking school. >> I
love alfred. >> You would, you're the d diva of everything
delicious. >> Beautiful kitchen and the sous chef was so -- >>
and yoda. >> What? I don't think this show has ever pulled to a
halt like we just did there. [00:08:34] >> Yoda is. >>
Speaking about the sous chef -- >> we are going to speak about
the actual chef that had put this program in place. It is
escoffier. It is his cook school. Who is this gentleman
and why do they want to learn his method? We are going to find
out in this week's history 101. >> George august escoffie rm ie,
bornin 1886. After an apprentice ship in in his uncle's
restaurant in 1886, he moved to the lepetit moulin rouge, he met
cesar ritz, the two formed a partnership and in 1890,
accepted a transfer to the savoy in london. Was an immediate
success. Attracted the attractive and moneyed.
Clientele. Women unaccustomed to dinerring dining in public. The
two set up their own ritz hotel company, in 1913 escoffier met
and so impressed kaiser will helm. Willhelm. Passed open 15
years later. During his lifetime, escoffier elevated
cooking to its realm. That's history 101. So did you learn
something there? Besides the fact that I'm a great
impersonator for kaiser wilhelm.Mr. Rodgers do we have
tweets in? [00:11:20] >> We do milord. >> Do you have a
favorite dish? >> I marsh mallows in our are fireplace
milord. >> Mr. Rodgers, much. Toasters, electric mixers,
sewing machines, what's the world coming the. We are seeing
technology taking its place right frank. >> You notice the
episode was all about the mail, m-a-i-l? There was a lot of
letter-writing, the letter knife went missing, the postman, you
saw him riding his bike. Its like was so important back then,
the mail was -- the letter was ten days late, he had two days
to get ready for his test. I thought it was interesting all
these new things were coming in, and the good old mail, we don't
even realize is on its way out eventually. >> A good plug since
the price of the stamp just went up. >> Oh, it did? >> There's a
little thing to support that. Poor tom is grousing about he
doesn't fit in doesn't belong and then edith says welcome to
the club. I loved that part of the show. Poor edith then. Then
there was another retort after that and that's where our quote
comes from, stop moaning says mary. How many of you think mean
mary is back? [Applause] >> when she was writing a letter. >>
Writing a letter. >> Also she has that wonderful comment about
her father, when she says to thomas, wee are in partnership
with a decent man. >> She is showing signs of being really
tough-minded when it comes to dealing with the estate or a
tenant or anything else. I would not like to be a tenant, who
didn't pay my rent with mary in charge. [00:13:26] >> She had
this immigrate lines the dowager countess. I wonder your tiara
grows heavy must be like wearing around the clock. Why didn't the
dowager didn't go to london? >> I wanted to freeze frame and
look all those up. >> Mb is a bachelor of medicine, bs is
bachelor of surgery, which is the british equivalent of an md
and mdcs, is the master of surgery at the college of
surgery. >> In our grantham gazette, is there a bun in the
oven? That's where our thoughts are going. >> Where is he? She's
looking for a letter from him. And what did she sign? >> That's
what I'm wondering about. If you are tuning in for answers here
you're not getting them just lots of more questions. Real
quick. This one, how come lady edith doesn't seem to have a
lady's made? Ponder that. Who would know some answers to some
of our questions, she is the woman responsible for
masterpiece the lovely rebecca eaton. And we're going ogo
across the pond. And hello given ms. Eaton. >> Hello, how are
you? >> It is nice to have you join us here in the manor house
as we like to say. >> I'm picturing it. >> What are you
thinking of bates? He's kind of getting scary on me. [00:15:29]
>> You have to give him a lot of room. He's had a lot of
difficulty in his life. And this is all very threatening to him.
But you have to just hold on tight. Believe in mr. Bates. >>
Okay, when you say something like that I know that you are
heavily involved in the show but you don't actually right the
show. >> No. >> How much do you know, how much influence do you
get to have on where this all goes? >> Well, I have to say, it
does all spring from the fertile imagination of julian fellowes
in england. And he is kind of managed by garrett neme who is
the managing director of carnival films who makes the
show. And the two of them are the people that go into the
windowless room and really hash it out. Also, liz truebridge who
is the line producer. So there is a team in england who really
do work on these scripts. They're sent to us when they're
in draft form. We have input, ideas, suggestions, we feed them
back. But julian does imagine all this in the first instance
and starts talking it through. Then he's encouraged to sit down
and write it, which he does. He has written every word of all
four series. >> Which is amazing in and of itself. >> Amazing. >>
We watch it on tv and lose perspective and start to believe
they're real. When you deal with them on a daily basis like you
and hear what's coming up have you ever lost sight of it, do
they become real? >> It's interesting, it used to and now
I have met all the actors who play the characteristics. I have
seen them in downtown new york city, after they have gotten out
of transatlantic flights. I kind of know who they are which puts
me in greater admiration of them. Which is different than
the role they play. Rob james collier, who is changing I
believe his name to robert james collier, who plays thomas, who
is the most light warm hearted man in the world, which is quite
against character. And anna, jo frogget, is quite like her, she
is warmer -- [00:18:15] >> I thought you would say she was
different. >> No, she's just much more glamorous. And edith
is finally getting to wear some really good dresses, in love.
Laura carmichael who plays edith is just lovely. So I did believe
they were really the crawley family who lived in downton
abbey until i began to see them without makeup. >> Well, I
wouldn't want anyone to see me without makeup. >> Me neither.
>> Ms. Eaton, thank you for joining us. Will you come back
for the final episode? >> Absolutely. I'll be right here.
>> We'll look forward to it. >> Bye-bye. >> Rebecca eaton will
be back with us on our season finale. And you can get her
book, making downton abbey. She's coming to houston, she'll
be here on april 8th to do an eventen on houston pbs. We talk
about this ask an interactive show. We have a live studio
audience. They have got questions and comments. If you
would like to be in our studio audience, go to houstonpbs.Org.
Mr. Rodgers a question from you. >> Milord. >> What advice might
she give, anna. To mr. Bates? >> The letter knife has gone
missing. >> Good one frank. This could be the letter knife. I see
where this is going. >> A question from lady carla milord.
>> Isabel and the village doctor seem to be chummy this year, is
love in the air? [00:20:20] >> I hope so. >> He did go on to
marry. >> I would love to see that couple. I think isabel
needs that. >> I think socially active couple. >> We'll see
where that one leads. Next question. >> A question from
lady barbara milord. >> Hi I'd like to know when the family
will find love interest for tom. >> He's such a whiner. >> Should
I be upstairs? Should I be downstairs? Let's go to america!
>> You brought it up last week, where does tom find his power
more now? >> He needs to go outside of the whole kind of you
know -- >> community? >> The downton bubble. He's not
downstairs anymore. Although the granthams and the crawleys
accept him as part of the family. They don't consider him
marriage material for their daughters. He needs to marry the
vicar's daughter or have a tenant farmer die and leave
behind a small farm or something like that. >> Or go to america
and fine an heiress. >> He's got a title now don't he? >> No he
doesn't, he's a shawfer. >> Sorry tom, I'm there for you. >>
Next question. >> Comments from lady fay milord. >> My comment
is really about the clothes. I'm not sure when the sewing machine
was invented, every time one of the women came on, look at her
outfit, look how beautiful her dress some can I'm curious when
the sewing machine was invented, even though they are authentic,
how beautiful -- >> we do know that they try to pay as close
attention to period piece. They try to be inspired by period
piece but they also try and inject, how did they put that,
some -- a new spin on things. But still keep them true because
they couldn't use actual garments from the time because
they wouldn't be in good enough condition but they'll find a
piece of fabric that looks as if it would reflect that time. The
sewing machine, as far as it's being invented -- [00:22:45] >>
I think at the end of the 19th century. >> It's great they have
the sewing machine but there's not plug sockets at every room.
>> You notice we're not stuck in the manor house every time, they
are going to different locations. This week's behind
the scenes, here we go. ♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪
♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪♪>> we have a lot of music in season 4.
Dancing, set pieces, parties, events and so on. >> We have one
episode that is pretty much all in london. Because we are
filming this at the time we are about to have a royal birth
announcement. So many roads are blocked off that we can't park
the vehicles. >> It's hard for us to shoot anywhere in a public
areas, being swamped with fans who want to watch that can make
it difficult. >> Shooting in london is a joy, but difficult,
now london is a modern city, still beautiful architecture but
all the complications. We have filmed at beautiful beautiful
clubs in london. >> Just getting around is, we're a big, big
unit. >> There are parts of london still have gas lights,
for instance. So you pick those areas to use as our streets. And
you get more freedom there but it's still logistical nightmare.
[applause] >>
Ernie: Which then makes me wonder, how weatherized are
these homes. Would they be able to hold up to a hurricane? We
hear a hurricane is headed towards yorkshire. [00:24:58] >>
A really strong nor'easter make its way over there, really
strong winds. But I don't think tom would have called it a
hurricane. I don't think he would have said a hurricane, woe
have said a really strong windstorm. It makes me think
they're americanizing this a little bit and doing some
foreshadowing. But you snow the weather is always the same,
mostly sunny and 60. It's been warm in england for about four
months now! >> What's interesting is he says hurricane
and mary says hurricane. >> Do you think they're going to get a
-- >> good either of them discuss the cone of certainty?
>> It's the cone of uncertainty. >> Doesn't know exactly where
it's going to hit. >> The hurricane forming in the north
sea boggled my mind. >> Ooh very strong nor'easter, and the jet
stream to england -- >> you're getting too smart on me. We go
back to our audience they speak my language. Mr. Rodgers, if you
would. >> Yes milord. >> More tweets? >> An a phone call --
and a phone cawrl milord. >> Should robert dress like a
monopoly board when he's kicking people out of the home. We think
edith signed those papers without reading them and left
her reading the newspaper debt whether he left town. >> Holding
something soon apparently. >> How would you think? I'm going
to leave that one alone. I have somewhere to go. Yay, a party,
those always go so well at downton. We have a birthday
party. A hurricane in yorkshire, what is going to happen next?
Anna and bates, I hope this ends up being like jane eyre rather
than wuthering heights. But we have to go back to our poll
question right now. What about lord byron's demise was? Did he
die in a dual against a man with whom an affair with his wife. He
died from an infection and bloodletting. He had a fever and
so they decided to let the blood go and that led to an infection.
We are going to say good-bye on a very high note. Cleverley
stone and st. John flynn. Thank you very much. And helen mann,
and frank billingsley. Thank you all very much. And we'll see you
next sunday night, this time. Good night. A
