Remember that fast food, scalding-hot coffee case? You know: The one involving the woman
who spilled hot coffee in her lap and got millions? The one that proved our legal system
was broken? Let me tell you a little bit more about that case. The woman's name was Stella
Leibeck, a grandmother from Albequerque. She received third-degree burns over 6% of her
body, had skin grafts, spent 8 days in the hospital, and it has been reported that she
offered to settle the case for just $20,000. The company refused this outrageous demand,
so the jury got to hear about dangerously superheated coffee and hundreds of other scalding
coffee claims.
For what it is worth, Mrs. Leibeck only received a fraction of the millions reported. So the
good news is: Our legal system isn't broken. The bad news is: Our way of reporting the
truth migth be.
