Hey YouTube, this is Urban Acolyte TV.
Let’s talk about Star Wars.
Okay, so I had a meeting yesterday with my Early Christian History professor, and he
asked what I’d been doing over my winter break. Of course I said that I’ve been geeking
out on Star Wars.
I was surprised that he still has not seen Episode 7, but he shared a funny story with
me about Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith.
I’m not sure what my professor was doing at the time— he’s gone on some archeology
digs as part of his research on Syrian Christian churches, so he’s made trips out to the
Middle East and parts of Asia.
Anyway, he somehow got his hands on a Chinese bootleg copy of Episode 3.
According to him, the bootleggers ran the English subtitles through a machine to translate
the script into Mandarin which was then spoken by voice actors. Here’s the thing— to
get the English subtitles, the bootleggers then ran the translated Mandarin script through
a machine that translated it back into English.
That sounds all kinds of backwards, right?
Okay, so you might be wondering why this is important to me at all, right?
Well, some of you know that I’m studying theology at Vanderbilt Divinity School, right?
Well, basically, in this bootleg version, the Jedi Council gets translated as Presbyterian
Church. My Professor said that Jedi Council is literally translated as the Council of
Elders. Now the word elder is also a presbyter. So a Council ruled by the elders or a gathering
of the Elders is the same thing as saying a Gathering of Presbyters or Presbyterian
Church.
I was raised in the Presbyterian Church, so that’s pretty cool, to me.
Here’s something to think about, though— if Anakin goes into the Jedi Temple and slaughters
everyone in there with the 501st legion, does that mean that Emperor Palpatine gave Anakin
the order to destroy the Presbyterian Church?
Man, that makes you wonder about Order 66…more like Order 666, huh?
Anyway, that’s an interesting tidbit about Star Wars Episode 3.
I’m going to work on finishing up my video on Supreme Leader Snoke. I’m hoping to get
it posted sometime tomorrow. Make sure to subscribe so you can stay up to date on when
I get that video posted.
Also, I’m planning to do a few videos about the connection between Finn, Rey, and Poe
as well as a video on Luke and The Force in the new Star Wars saga.
If you have not seen them already, make sure to check out these videos I did on Finn. You
can click here to get Finn’s background and here to find out 5 reasons I think Finn
is going to become a Jedi by the end of the new trilogy.
Thanks for watching everyone. Y’all keep on breathing, and May the Force Be With You.
