>>DOROTHY: Most people know us as the thrift store retailers, however, one of the things
that we are becoming increasingly known for now is the fact that we put a significant
number of people to work each year.
Two years ago we decided to open up our resources to the entire community and by opening up
our resources, meaning we opened up a series of Workforce Connection Centers, which basically
are sites where anyone who is looking for a job in the community can actually come in
and actually find work, talk to counselors and others who can help provide supportive
services, but more importantly is to provide them with at least a ray of hope.
Most people who come to us and use our services say to us that it’s very easy to come in
and to find the help and support that they need. For one there isn’t any kind of extensive
registration and secondly, these services are open and available to anyone in the community,
regardless of income or economic social status. And so what we do basically when they come
here is find out what help they need and we personalize the help and tailor the services
to the individuals.
The recession that we’re in right now has been a recession that’*** everyone equally,
and so the people who are coming to us now for help are not necessarily those who we’ve
helped in the past. It’s everyone, from white-collar workers to college graduates,
dislocated workers to displaced housewives, just all across the spectrum. People are coming
to us seeking assistance and finding it.
