It’s been a real challenge for the Lady Cougars – a new coach – and a small team.
With just nine players this season they have to stay healthy – and strong.
But that’s not a problem. For the first time they’re doing in-season strength training.
It’s designed – in part – to prevent injuries and keep them on the court.

we can decrease the amount of injuries on the court whether it be non-contact from landing
or correcting the baugas of the knee, increasing the strength and mobility of the ankle.
Chelsie Damon is one of four returning sophomores. Chelsie Damron, Sophomore Post Guard: There’s
a big difference. I feel like we are more focused and we don’t have as much downtime.
But that’s good. We’re keeping our bodies in shape and we’re keeping the muscle we
gained during the off season. Last year I feel like we didn’t focus enough on it and
we just assumed we were in good shape because of our preseason workouts.
Crystal on camera: Even the new women’s coach sees the advantages of spending time
off the court. He says it’s already helping reduce injuries.
Joel Renner, Women’s Basketball Coach: Coach Hargus sets the schedule for us that he thinks
is appropriate. He says two hours a week is probably what these girls need to get better
and improve their strength. Most of them aren’t used to this.
The team got off to its best start in years with five straight wins. The players are shooting
for their next goal: the regional playoffs.
