Real Community drops in on one of the nation’s hottest volleyball teams – the Columbus
State Cougars. I’m Crystal Wilson. They were unranked in the preseason. Then, out
of nowhere, they vaulted to number six in the first regular season coaches poll.
The near-perfect record of ten-and-one in early division-two play likely factored in
- as did new coach Kevin Burch. Kevin Burch, CSCC Volleyball Coach: I think
the tone we set from day one – hard work and fundamentals, fundamentals, fundamentals
– we wanted to keep it simple. They go so good at these simple fundamentals early. We
beat teams by making fewer errors. Hard work and good old-fashioned defense can do a lot
for your. Kacie Kunke, Freshman: Our coach is great.
It’s his first year and he pushes us and I think our team bonds. I think we’re all
best friends and I think that shows out on the court because we’ve been working really
hard together. Rebeca Beger is one of only three returning
players who will be expected to set an example on court and off.
Rebecca Berger, Sophomore: You just have to be disciplined – go to class and study tables.
There isn’t too much free time. Off season we have plenty of free time.
Last year the Cougars placed seventh at the national junior college division-two tourney.
Teamwork will be vital as they attempt to spike their way to the top this season.
