(PEOPLE CHATTER INDISTINCTLY)
Welcome to Fair Trading. This is Sohad.
May I start with your first name, please?
My name's Sohad Matthews
and I work with the Fair Trading Information Centre
that actually services all of New South Wales.
Not many people would say this, but I love my job. (LAUGHS)
Thank you, Jessica. How may I help you?
The job is just to take customers' enquiries,
and try to solve their issues.
Whether it be a trader they're having a problem with,
or it's a product or a service they've obtained.
..mediating between you as a builder and the customer to see why.
I take about 45 to 50 enquiries a day.
OK.
We have tenancy enquiries, building enquiries,
bond enquiries, strata enquiries.
Yes, you're speaking with an Aboriginal officer.
We have a variety of customer officers
who are from a different cultural background.
They help each other and they support each other.
(ALL LAUGH)
And we all participate in community events,
fundraising activities like Jeans for Genes Day
or the animal welfare support.
I have a little puppy dog who I take for a walk in the afternoon.
My family - they appreciate my line of work
and they know how important it is to help the community.
Thanks for the call today, Adam.
I had a lady who, after discussing her issue,
she said to me, "Now that I've talked to you, my blood was boiling before,
"but now I'm all better and calm."
And she obviously ended on a happy note
because she knew her rights and obligations.
Every enquiry I get, I feel like I'm helping someone from my family.
I feel like I empower them with the information I provide.
I like the customer to know and leave us with,
at the end of each phone call,
that the Fair Trading Information Centre is there for them
to give them the information that they can rely on.
