Well within the Anishinaabe culture there is a process where we can access the spiritual
and what happens is that we always check with the spirits and say is this the way we should
do things, how should I do this. Certain situations that may baffle us on direction. So spiritual
direction, we can access that through several ways, [ojibwe] is a shaking tent and what
it is is a tent and the person, a gifted individual, male or female is given a gift where they
are able to conjure up the spirits and ask them questions about the spiritual and our
legends and our stories, there was a time when the Anishinaabe people of this land were
called the grandchildren and the animals were already all here. All the animals at the time
were speaking to each other and the creator would speak with them and ask each individual
animal "what are you going to do to get ready for the arrival of the grandchildren" and
they are talking about the arrival of the Anishinaabe people so each animal was pledged
to do certain things. Today that still occurs, you know, the deer pledges itself to provide
food for the humans, and the moose and all the food we have, the buffalo, the word for
buffalo is [ojibwe] - the prairie cow
