every unit in Q has a vocabulary skill
the vocabulary skills are tips or strategies
to help you expand your vocabulary and use the new words appropriately
the vocabulary skill for unit 1
is understanding meaning from context
so what context text is simply the words
or sentences that surround
the word that you do not know so its
all the words all the sentences around
an unfamiliar word so how can we use context
to figure out a new word let's look at the example sentence
she started as a coat checker
at Maggie's place and after a series of
promotions and that's the word we want to try to understand
eventually became general manager
so if we use the word that I've underlined
as our context we can sort of come to a conclusion
of what promotion might mean we have one job
that we've underlined coat checker we understand this is that some sort of a
restaurant
Maggie's Place so a coat checker would be a person
who would hang up the coats for the customers as they came into the
restaurant
and after a series of promotions became
general manager so we can tell when we think about these two jobs
coat checker general manager that a promotion
probably involves someone receiving
a higher position or more important job
now we were able to guess the meaning a promotion just from that one sentence
but sometimes we have to listen to more than just a sentence
to be able to understand what an unfamiliar word might mean
so let's look at that example here we're trying to understand
the word alleviate so let's look at
all the sentences around the word alleviate
knowing someone will fit in doesn't
alleviate other problems Carly Drum hired four
trusted friends to work at her family's Executive Search
firm one of them had great potential
uh but was bringing her personal problems to
the office it was affecting her work
so if we look at all love the sentences
we can sort it put together well
let's see here's an example someone hired a friend
and they thought it would work out but the friend actually brought problems
so knowing someone having a friend
doesn't alleviate
problems well even though she was a friend she was
someone that was known she still brought her personal problems
so we can probably determine here then that alleviate
means just to solve, correct or
remove the problem so that's a little example
of how to use contact when deciding what a new vocabulary word means
okay so let's get a little practice
using context to determine the meaning
of some unfamiliar words we're gonna try to figure out the meaning
up the bold-faced words environment
function resolve aptitude
and exhibit okay so let's look at the first sentence
the job didn't pay very well hmm but I love the office
and my coworkers so office and coworkers kind of give me a hint
as to what the environment might
mean let's go down here and see if there's something that might
fit how about b the conditions
that affect a person's behavior and development so conditions
could be talking about the office and the coworkers
because that's what made it such a great environment
to work in the conditions
made it a great place to work
alright so I would say that's accurate for number one
how about number two it's impossible to function well
when you don't get along with your coworkers
I can't work in a situation like that
function I cant work
I don't get along with my coworkers seems like function aand work may have
some relationship
let's see if there something down here that might ift
how about c to work in the correct way
now one way to check and see if we have the right
substitution for the bold-faced word is just to do that
try plugging it in and not using function but using that definition that
we selected
it is impossible to work in the correct way
when you don't get along with your coworkers
that fits perfectly so that would be the meaning
of functionhow about number three
I'm sure you can resolve the conflict with your co worker
if you listen to each other's opinions
okay so we've got conflict which we know is a problem looks like there's problems
with the coworker
and we're talking about maybe needing to listen to each other's opinions
so listening to each other's opinions
because we have this conflict a problem
sounds like resolve might have something to do
with how about about D finding an acceptable solution to a problem
let's try to substitute that and see if that makes sense
I'm sure you can find an acceptable solution to the problem with your co
worker
if you listen to each other's opinions well that makes sense
so will choose d number four
Jamie has great apptitude but he needs more training
in a year or so he'll probably be our best programmer
okay sol he has apptitude
but but but needs more training so later
in about a year he's gonna be our best programmer
so I'm not talking about now because he still needs more training so
aptitude hmm maybe what he had something natural
ability to do something and training will improve it
let's see if that works James had
a natural ability but he needs more training
yeah I would say that that fits very well
for aptitude natural ability
and number five the members at Emily's group are experienced and talented
plus they exhibit great teamwork
okay well we really only have one answer left
which is to show or display
so is there anything in this sentence that helps us know that we've chosen the
correct answer
to show or display hmm let's see
members of the group experienced talented
and great teamwork well
we can kind of assume then that exhibit
if they have great teamwork they show great teamwork they display a great team
work
so that would make sense for exhibit
okay so it's really not that difficult you just
have to kinda reason it out and find the clue words
the context that will help you to determine the meaning
of an unknown word good job
