I DID A RESEARCH PROJECT CORRELATING THE EFFECTS
OF EXERCISE PERFORMANCE AND INTELLECTUAL ABILITY,
BEHAVIOR AND QUALITY OF LIFE IN CONGENITAL HEART DISEASE
PATIENTS.
I AM A PATIENT WITH CONGENITAL HEART DISEASE,
WHICH IS HOW I BECAME INTERESTED IN THIS TOPIC
AND WHEN I ASKED DR. WERNOVSKY TO BE MY MENTOR THREE YEARS AGO,
HE GLADLY SAID, "YES.",
AND WAS HELPING BE OUT THE ENTIRE WAY.
AND WE DID A STUDY WHERE WE TOOK PATIENTS IN THE EXERCISE
PHYSIOLOGY LAB AT CHOP AND AFTER THEY
COMPLETED THEIR STRESS TEST, WE GAVE THEM A SERIES
OF SURVEYS: THE PCQLI,
WHICH IS THE PEDIATRIC CARDIAC QUALITY OF LIFE INVENTORY;
THE YOUTH SELF-REPORT, AND CHILD BEHAVIOR CHECKLIST,
AND THE KBIT-2, WHICH WAS AN ACADEMIC TEST TO LOOK
AT A WIDE VARIETY OF HEALTH-RELATED,
QUALITY-OF-LIFE TOPICS.
AFTER DOING SOME DATA ANALYSIS,
WE FOUND DUE TO OUR SMALL POPULATION,
WE DIDN'T FIND MUCH OF A CORRELATION,
BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN THAT THERE ISN'T ONE,
AND THAT MORE RESEARCH SHOULDN'T BE CONDUCTED.
BUT I HAD A GREAT TIME DOING ALL THIS.
I LEARNED A LOT FROM ALL THE DOCTORS AT CHOP
AND I'M REALLY GRATEFUL THAT I HAD THIS EXPERIENCE TO LEARN
ABOUT SOMETHING THAT'S AFFECTING ME FOR THE REST
OF MY LIFE.
