For 75 years
in good times and in bad times
when the
folks on Wall Street a few years ago destroyed our economy, alright.
When millions of people lost their life time savings
social security was there paying out every nickel owed to every eligible American. Let’s not forget
that.
The reason is we were able to defeat the
ridiculous idea to privatize social security
and now what we're saying is leave social security alone.
Back off social security it hasn't contributed a penny. I repeat to the deficit and its in
great shape for the next many decades. Lets worry about social security when it’s a problem, today
it's not a problem.
What irritates me,
is we hear pundits and politicians take the bate that’s been thrown to them by these
Republicans over the past few decades.
You throw it to them and they grab it.
They grab it and claim social security is headed for bankruptcy it is not everybody.
And they put this out,
this is what they put out
so you're going to hear
alotta junk.
And I what you
and I want the press.
I want the press
to look at this junk skeptically, okay?
As the majority leader said anybody who tells you that,
who tells you that social security has contributed one nickel
to our deficit or national debt is simply not telling you the truth.
Well you use that word.
Social security today has a 2.6 trillion
dollars surplus.
Social security today can pay out every benefit owed to every eligible American for the next 26
years.
At which point it could pay out 78% the benefits if we want social security to be
strong for the next 60-70 years
you left that cap. Start at 250, ask the billionaires to start contributing.
At the end of the day
You know, at the end of the day
this issue is not about numbers,
and it's not even about dollars, and sense
it's about promises.
It’s about keeping promises. And America is a great nation because we keep our promise
and we're going to continue to do that.
We always have to remember the social security is backed by the full faith and credit United
States government.
As long as this government continues social security will continue.
It has never once failed,
it is not going to fail
and our job right now
is to stand up to those people who are attacking social security not for financial reasons
they're attacking it for ideological and political reasons. We're gonna stand up,
hands-off social security.
Thank you very much.
