Meet Shannan Williams.
This 21 year old college student, like many Coloradans, loves the outdoors...
And she doesn't let her cerebral palsy slow her down.
Due to my physical limitations, physical activity is important to my health, both mentally and
physically and those activities have for me have the same benefit as physical and that
way I get to be outdoors.
You could say she got the “activity gene” from her parents.
Outdoor sports were very much a part of our lives. And when Shannan came along it was
a challenge to find new ways to incorporate her in the family life. It was going to be
something different. And we set out to make sure Shannan had access, to the active lifestyle
that included some pretty incredible adventures along the way.
And we'll try to find a little bit of powder along the way. Awesome. Alright, sounds good.
Getting on the mountain, everybody’s out here to ski and to play and so just a place
where I feel equal, so it’s nice and fun.
Jud had volunteered with the National Sports Center for the Disabled - which is headquartered
in Winter Park - even before Shannan was born.
So the family knew just where to go when looking for activities.
Skiing in particular is amazing because for a lot of these people it’s the only place
in their life where gravity is their friend. So if you’re confined to a wheelchair or
other types of devices to help you walk, that freedom of gliding down a hill, you can’t
even describe it.
And what better way to celebrate this than the Wells Fargo Ski Cup, which is the primary
fund-raiser for NSCD.
Wells Fargo’s an amazing supporter of the NSCD and has been for many many many years,
and this event is extremely important and we are forever grateful.
It’s truly priceless what Wells Fargo does for us. We genuinely couldn’t do what we
do without Wells Fargo.
Like the pros, Shannan likes to go fast.
Let's shred it … yeah we are, and a left turn.
Not only do I get a thrill for watching them, but I can look at those professionals and
just by watching them use it as a learning experience and an inspiration and an internal
push for me.
This is a life changer. It gives people confidence, in a way that maybe they don’t get through
their jobs. And mental health is an important part and
this is a major contributor to a person’s self-esteem.
