The great thing about a cultural studies degree is that is gives you a range of theoretical
and practical skills so you have a framework within which to work, and then you can move
on from there with a lot of practical experience. What was most beneficial about the Cultural
Studies degree once I commenced employment was the adaptability of what I had learnt.
I had a lot of excellent general knowledge about media, telecommunications, policy, governments,
institutions, generally the way that cultural institutions and media institutions, and also
educational institutions worked which meant that when I came to the point where I was
searching for employment I was quite a sought after candidate.
The Cultural Studies degree equips you with a wide variety of skills and it really depends
on which direction you want to take it in. In my personal experience I gained some invaluable
research skills, a lot of teamwork and collaboration experience, expose to communications media
and technology which has been very useful, one of my positions was working with video
games so that was directly as a result of expose to technology during my Cultural Studies
degree. Also, a really good understanding of the way in which media works, both how
it is produced and how to analyse media, which is something I think is increasingly useful
for employers. For example, a lot of my cohorts have been employed in social media, primarily
because Cultural Studies students are also fantastic social media employees.
Cultural Studies is a highly adaptable degree, you can really apply it to a wide variety
of contexts, both theoretically and in a practical sense, so I think that employers are increasingly
valuing the kinds of degrees where you are not necessarily coming in with a set of skills
or a range of knowledge, but both of those things that you can apply to whatever the
task is in front of you, and I think that kind of dynamic ability is one of the things
that has ensure that I have been able to maintain very interesting employment opportunities
for myself.
