[David Whitehouse]: “We think that these small vessels, and they are small, so they’re
for small quantities of substances, were basically used for perfumes. Costly perfumes kept in
vessels, which are a variety of shapes, as you can see.”
[Kid 2]: How old are these little jars?
[Narrator]: Some of them are over 3500 years old. But glass containers like these weren’t
the very first objects made out of glass.
[David]: “Amulets, beads and little figurines were made long before people figured out how
to make glass into something useful. When they worked it out, they came up with a technique
called ‘core-forming.’
[Kid 2]: Why are some of them pointy at the end?
[Narrator]: Well, if they were filled with something liquid, you could push the pointy
end into the soft sand or dirt to keep the jar from tipping over and spilling out. What
else do you think core-formed vessels might have been used for?
