Stephanie Castano: My name is Stephanie Castano.
I am a senior at Oregon State University studying Public Health,
and I am a student intern at the Office of Advocacy.
The Office of Advocacy is here
to empower and support students within the university.
In addition to helping with conflicts,
and researching, and providing general assistance to students,
we work to support and further
the best interest of students throughout the university.
We encourage all students to contact our office
with any questions or disputes that involve the university.
Haley Jones: Hi, my name is Haley Jones.
I am a senior at Oregon State University
and I’m studying Political Science and Philosophy.
I am an advocacy intern at the Office of Advocacy.
The Office of Advocacy assists students
with academic and personal issues
that involve a misunderstanding with the university
or any of its administrative units.
We handle disputes within a broad spectrum of issues.
If you have questions or concerns
regarding an entity on campus,
or an off-campus facility with close ties to OSU
such as the Co-op or The Gem apartment complex,
our office can help you resolve the issue.
The office is funded by student incidental fees.
The students we serve are given unbiased
and equal treatment under all conditions.
The Office of Advocacy strives to assist
all currently enrolled individuals.
However, the Office of Advocacy is unable
to participate in disputes between students.
Since all students pay incidental fees,
the Office of Advocacy cannot help either student
when their interests are in conflict.
Claudia Mata: Hi, my name is Claudia Mata,
and I am a Psychology major.
I am an intern at the Office of Advocacy.
The Office of Advocacy strictly adheres
to the practice of maintaining student confidentiality.
All staff members are trained and well-versed
in upholding a high standard of privacy
regarding all information
pertaining to our clients and their issues.
Sophie Wilson: So how can you all help me today?
Patricia Lacy: Well, I think that we may be able
to help you out in several ways,
and first we need to identify your issue.
But I just want to introduce myself briefly.
I’m Patricia Lacy.
I’m the director of the ASOSU Office of Advocacy
and have been at OSU in that capacity for twelve years.
And the issues that we most frequently encounter,
and as I understand what you have described to me,
though yours would be covered within this,
I do a lot of academic and ASOSU advising.
And then additionally, we have seen an increase
in academic dishonesty allegations,
but that is not what you are here for.
Sometimes students have issues with campus security
or maybe they have had an encounter
with Oregon State Police on campus,
discrimination, faculty misconduct,
financial aid, grade dispute.
Sometimes students are over at INTO OSU,
and they have an issue because they pay students fees
just like all the domestic students.
Privacy, residency, sometimes students have been…
It has been alleged that they have violated
the student conduct code,
and so there is a hearing pending,
and I help them prepare for those.
A question about students health insurance,
tuition, fees, business,
you know, any of our accounts
that you thought there was an unjustified charge.
And then finally, what I think that we'll be working on
is University Housing and Dining Services.
Also we help students who live in the Gem,
which is slightly off campus,
but very closely tied to campus,
so we service those issues as well.
Sophie Wilson: Okay, well thank you.
Patricia Lacy: Thank you for coming today.
Sophie Wilson: ...fantastic!
Claudia Mata: The Office of Advocacy is located
in Room 133 Snell Hall.
We are open Monday to Friday
from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
You can call them at (541) 737-9200
