Hmm, why is this program slowing to a crawl?
[ ♪♪♪ ]
Hi there, I'm Roberto. Hope you guys are doing well.
We go to school for twelve years, thirteen years if you count kindergarten.
Wait, is that timeframe standard across all of the world?
But throughout those years they teach us many things.
Yes, some things we don't get to use in our daily lives outside school but many of the
things we are taught prove extremely valuable. Besides the obvious ones: reading, writing
and counting, I have to say the lesson I have valued the most is the scientific method.
It turns out you don't have to use a lab coat and deal with some dangerous chemicals, or
dissect and look through some animal's guts, to apply the scientific method.
For example, while testing software to find and report bugs I've had to do a lot of observation...
Hmm, why is this program slowing to a crawl? Coming out with a hypothesis...
Opening too many webpages might be consuming too many system resources.
Experimenting and collecting data... OK, let's open these three webpages...
Analyzing that data... Hmm, according to Task Manager Chrome has
created seven processes and is using 485 megabytes of RAM. Out of 4 gigs, that's not too much.
More experimentation, more data gathering until we can come up with a conclusion.
But if you really think about it, for a lot of what you do in your daily life, outside
school and outside work, you still apply the scientific method.
You are still making observations, coming up with ideas of what might be going on, trying
out things and coming out with a conclusion based on your personal experience.
The sad part is that many times we stop halfway. How many time you have observed a person's
behavior at a specific moment and have made yourself the idea that this person is a jerk,
without giving them a chance to prove themselves? How many times have you seen a dish for the
first time and without even trying it out you go: "Eww, that food is nasty"?
I understand not all persons, not all situations will lend themselves to the proper testing
environment. You can't always get good control and variable
test subjects. But still we should do our best to go through
the whole process before making our conclusions. But now I have this to ask you: What is something
that you have learned while in school, or that you learned when you were in school,
that has stayed with you throughout your life? Please, share it in the comments.
