>> I'm Sophia Michael, I'm from southern Vermont, from like a smaller town called Fair Haven,
we border New York but we're pretty far up there
it's about like a 6 hour drive, but I made it.
>> That's pretty cool what made you want to come to Tyler?
>>Um I had previously looked at the school over my spring break and I really liked it
a lot , I mean the visit was really good and
I had actually recieved this grant for money that they wanted to use for the arts and it
actually worked out perfectly like the money was the same as the
admission cost and everything and um it just seemed to fit really well and I really do
need to work on my portfolio, so it was like a perfect
fit.
>> So you'd say that you definitely don't regret taking time out of your summer to take
summer courses?
>> No definitely not, like one I feel like we're doing, we're making a lot of progress,
we're making a lot of work that I am proud of, and even
just the people as well ahve been really fantastic, like our class all gets along so well and
I just enjoy spending my time here working and you
know "playing" sort of.
>> So are you staying in the housing here?
>> Um yes I'm staying at U of Penn with the Julian Krinsky group and that's where the
housing is like supplied, so it cost a little bit more
money but I definitely thought it was worth it because it's like that whole sort of experience,
like I do have family around the Philadelphia area that I could have
stayed with and taken a train in, but yeah I just thought the housing would be more interesting
like more involved
>> Yeah I agree. So do you have people that like from your classes who stay in the housing
that you have like this whole experience with?
>> Yeah um there's two other girls who are also like in my specific Tyler class with
me, like the Portfolio Bootcamp and it's really cool cause
we can talk about what we're doing in class in and out of it, but there's also um there's
the three of us, then there's four other Tyler students
that are staying at Penn and we're all actually getting close, like we all eat dinner together
and since we're like sort of on the same schedule and we have like the same free time, the same
work time and I don't know it's just been really great.
>> That sounds awesome. So what kind of work have you been doing in classes?
>> Um in classes we have been doing a lot of drawing cause we talked about how drawing
is sort of the foundation to a lot of your work it's really what
they're going to be looking at in your portfolio. Yesterday we worked with a nude model, her
name was Trudy and um she was really great though,
it was actually my first nude model I had done, like I had done models before where
they were wearing like skimpier clothing but I had never done
like fully nude, so it was really cool to experience that, and I thought that was really
helpful
>> So would you say your teacher is awesome probably?
>> Yes I do like Rob a lot. Yeah he's a lot of fun, I like working with him, like I've
definitely learned stuff, but he's also fun like sort of
outside of when you're not too serious, like he can be fun, and when you are serious, it's
very constructive and it's very open, like the class
is good and he's a great instructor I'm really enjoying it.
>> Great so you'd say you've like learned a lot from like not only him but your classmates,
like would say it's helpful watching everyone else
work?
>> Yeah it's definitely helpful, it's helpful like I don't want to say comparing youself
but it's like newer inspiration, like you'll be like, oh
that person did this differently than I did, like maybe I can add a little bit of that
in my work, also it's interesting like everyone's surrounding
a still life or something, the different angles that were chosen, yeah i think it's very constructive
working with the other students and seeing things that everyone else has done as well
as like seeing my work in relation to theirs.
>> do you like the campus ,is it easy to like kind of navigate?
>> Yeah so far, I haven't seen too much of the Tyler campus yet but um we did the - what's
the walkway?
>> Liacorus?
>> Yeah we did walk down to Liacorus and then there's the Crepe truck like right outside
which I actually haven't tried yet, today I was planning
on trying it, but everyone said they're really brilliant and um apparently the gyro is the
best one to get so I'm gonna go for that today. We actually
yesterday went to try to look at the theatre, like we started walking and everyone was like
"can I help you can I help you" cause apparently it was
locked and we weren't supposed to be going in there cause there was going to be a show
later that night, but it was, we're still in the state of
like exploring the campus, so it's pretty easy to navigate and I feel comfortable like
asking people where to go or whatever.
>> That's really cool that's good that you feel that comfortable, you can just have fun
exploring, you're not just like confined to like the studio
>> Yeah like we go outside to eat lunch like on the stairs, I don't know, like personally
I like being outside more that being in the building,
not that the building is really beautiful like especially all the new facilities, like
the lighting in here is like gorgeous it's perfect
>> Do you think your skills improved?
>> Um yeah I think like through each drawing we've done so far, like I have seen like I'm
trying to approach things somewhat differently in
different ways and I'm definitely growing as an artist and my skill level like what
I was talking about before like working with the other
students and they help you grow as well as the instructor Rob and he's also very helpful
I definitely think my stuff is improving.
