Hello YouTube! Now, as you know, our Wednesday video had a mind of its own and actually published
itself on Monday. This means of course that there isn't a video today because well, the
video is already up.
Except, now there IS a video, because I've decided to do a little bonus video, I guess!
So what am I doing here today? Well, I just wanted to show off the results of a pretty
good Deshaker operation!
If you watched my Bent-Knee Walk Vlog, which was some time ago, I believe at the end of
2012, I actually mentioned that a great way to stabilize videos would be to bend your
knees and walk to absorb the impact, and to get even better results when you bring the
footage home, run that footage through a little program called Deshaker.
Deshaker is a VirtualDub plugin, and basically what it does is it analyzes the footage, and
stabilizes it. The footage I'm gonna show you today actually came from the Navy Open
House which I went to a few weeks back with a friend.
It was extremely crowded, we actually weren't able to get into many of the shows, we weren't
able to get onto any of the ships as well, which was kinda sad, but it didn't mean all
hope was lost from a photo/video perspective, because you know, when you have a camera with
36x optical zoom, there are things you can do!
So, this particular show involved a helicopter. We were not able to get into the show because
it was at the opposite end of the showgrounds. However I was actually able to pull a zoom
across a pretty large body of water and well, I was actually able to capture the action!
Now, for any of you who have experience shooting at such extreme focal ranges, you'll know
that it's quite a challenge to actually keep your footage stable because any minor shakes
is gonna shake up the entire picture.
And it didn't help when my friend just bumped into me and just destroyed everything, so
I actually thought the footage was ruined, but when I came back I actually ran the entire
thing through Deshaker, and to my surprise the results looked amazing!
The thing is, there was very little data for Deshaker to work with, and despite that, it
was able to do a very good job! So what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna show you a side-by-side
comparison.
Do note that there is actually no sound in these clips because well, they were shot at
60 frames per second, and when my camera does high speed slow motion like this, it doesn't
record sound.
Also what this means is what you're seeing right now is actually 60fps slowed down to
30fps, so everything is going at half-speed.
Notice how the little shakes are basically completely eliminated.
Now, you'll notice some artifacts here and there. I decided to leave them in so you can
see some of the limitations of using this method, but yea, the results are pretty much
90% good!
Oh, and this is where my friend unceremoniously crashed into me! Look at just how well Deshaker
handled that!
And there you have it! Just a very quick video to show you how amazing Deshaker is.
So I guess that's it! It's a little bit short, but for a bonus video I guess it's okay!
