Starting in their freshman year,
students in the School of Engineering and Applied Science have hands-on access
to the field's most sophisticated technology
including an atomic force microscope,
a 3d printer, and a supersonic wind tunnel.
The Department of Engineering offers degrees in biomedical,
civil, electrical, industrial, and mechanical engineering.
The Computer Science department offers programs in computer science,
computer engineering, computer science and mathematics, as well as a dual degree
program that allows students to complete their bachelor's and master's degree
in an accelerated amount of time. The school encourages collaboration
between students and faculty.
Engineering professors have won multi-million dollar National Science
Foundation grants and served as consultants for national research labs.
The computer science faculty have expertise in cognitive neuroscience,
artificial intelligence, security, software engineering,
data mining, and algorithms. Our classes are small
and all taught by professors, not graduate assistants.
That means your professors will really get to know you,
becoming trusted mentors who can help you reach your goals.
Beginning in September 2015, the School of Engineering and Applied Science will
offer a co-op program to provide qualified students,
as early as their sophomore year, with substantial work experience
and the ability to connect with industry leaders in Long Island and New York City,
which is just a short train ride away from our campus. Being in this lab
really has inspired me to pursue science as a
career, like even beyond just engineering. And since my time here, I've
decided that I want to pursue a PhD instead of
going straight into the industry, and having this access to
this equipment here really showed me that with enough passion, interest in the subjects,
I can do amazing things in advanced fields of medicine and
science. With the creation of the School of Engineering and Applied Science,
Hofstra University became only the third university in the New York
metropolitan area
to have schools of law, medicine and engineering.
There has never been a more exciting time to be an engineer
or computer science student at Hofstra, where great teaching,
world-class technology, and a commitment to practical experience
will prepare you to compete in a complex marketplace.
