So we are at the airport in Hanoi. We just finished a month backpacking through the country
and three months backpacking around other parts of SE Asia and next up we are going
somewhere new. We sure are. We're going to base ourselves for a little while somewhere
and yeah we're going to keep it a little mystery for now. We'll give you a few hints and you
can try to guess. It's a country that Sam has been to before and a country that I have
never been to.
We have arrived. That was the shortest flight ever which was only about an hour and a half.
Where could we be? Well, we're still not give it away just yet. It is still a mystery. I'll
tell you what. That was one of the easiest Immigration ever. I wish all Immigration checkpoints
were like this. Hello. Smile. We're here.
We're here at a cafe. I can't tell you where because it is still a mystery. This is what
travel bloggers do when they have to wait six or seven hours for a train or a bus or
a plane. We just geek out in a cafe with wifi.
So we've been hanging out in cafes and at the airport for most of the day because in
order to reach our final destination we have to take a thirteen hour train ride. We were
just at the train station and I guess we were standing on the wrong platform, so I saw the
train pulling in and I was staring at the lights, which kind of blinded me a little
and then when everything came into focus I saw the name of the city where we are headed
and we were on the wrong side of the platform.
So, in a mad dash I run to the Thai police officer who is behind this little plexiglass
screen and immediately ask him is this for Chiang Mai and I point at the train. And he's
like yeah, yeah! And he's on the phone and he actually got the train to stop for us.
Otherwise, we would have totally missed it. We walked across the tracks and got on. Talk
about a close call. Oh yeah! So I guess the secret is out. Where are we moving to? Chiang
Mai.
We're on a train to Chiang Mai and this is my first time sleeping in a train that looks
like this. What would we call this? I don't know.
When we first got on the train there we regular seats here so we were sitting facing each
other and then in the evening they come around and just turn it around and create these beds
and put up curtains and give you bed sheets and I feel like I'm camping out. It would
have taken me ten times as long to make the bed. I'm impressed.
I had the best sleep last night. That was the most comfortable bed. I think I slept
maybe eleven hours or something. I really needed a good long sleep. Now we're here in
the dining cart and we just got a couple of hours before we go to Chiang Mai and we're
going to have some breakfast.
Today I feel like modern day Paul Theroux just hanging out on the train, people watching,
enjoying my meal and admiring the countryside. Isn't that what he does?
So we've just arrived in Chiang Mai. We got off the train and now we're taking a tuk-tuk
to our residence apartment. Oh la lah.
So we have arrived at our new home in Chiang Mai, Thailand and this is our view from the
balcony. Check it out! We're thrilled with our new apartment and we can't wait to show
you a full tour coming up very soon.
