PUSD Board Meeting Highlights
for Tuesday, January 25, 2011
Measure TT:
The Citizen’s Oversight Committee reported on a recent audit
of the $350 million facilities improvement bond, Measure TT.
The audit found that, with no exceptions,
PUSD has appropriately expended bond funds
while delivering 95% of projects on time and under budget.
Ethnic Studies Courses:
The Board of Education approved a recommendation
to develop an ethnic studies pilot course by April 2011.
The ethnic studies option is designed to support development
of the inter-personal and social skills and cultural diversity
described in the graduate profile in the Strategic Plan.
Accountability System:
Dr. Gary Carnow, Director of Technology and Assessment, presented an update
on the alignment of accountability indicators with the Strategic Plan.
Dr. Carnow introduced proposed indicators
to measure PUSD’s performance in the areas
designated as Strategic Priorities in the PUSD Strategic Plan, including:
student achievement, instruction, the learning environment,
organizational performance, partnerships, and parent engagement.
Once finalized, these indicators will be used
to provide progress reports to the Board and the community.
Achievement Gap:
Dr. Alice Petrossian reported on the District’s progress
toward closing the gap in achievement between specified student populations
and their peers District-wide and state-wide.
The student sub-groups include African-American and Latino students,
socioeconomically disadvantaged students, English Learners,
and Special Education students.
The data demonstrated that for ethnic and socioeconomic sub-groups,
PUSD students perform at higher levels than their peers statewide,
but Special Education and English Learners in PUSD perform at lower levels
than students across the state.
Staff also presented a range of professional development,
instructional strategies and data assessment interventions
being utilized to close the gap between subgroups
within PUSD while raising achievement for all students.
