-Continuing on with our program we have a special guest with us today
-He has just arrived to Los Angeles. He's an expert in Peruvian Ancestral Medicine.
For over two decades he has been looking for ways to integrate
modern medicine and psychoterapy with chamanism and ancestral medicine
-His name is... Let me make sure I get it right.
Pio Vucetich. We are grateful
for your presence here with us. Good evening
-Good evening. Very glad to be here in Los Angeles for the first time
and to join you in your program
-Have we pronounced your name correctly?
-Yes. You've pronounced it well.
-Pio Vucetich. Many thanks
-It's your first time here in L.A?
-Yes. I'm impressed with it.
-What do you think of it?
- Very beautiful.
Very spacious and very busy .
I had a good impression.
-Could you tell us a little bit more about your path?
-I come from Cuzco
from a town named Paucartambo
During the time of the Spanish conquest
many doctors and priests flew
to the areas that were more inaccessible
Paucartambo was one of such areas at the time
There, the traditional medicine knowledge was preserved
Millenarian knowledge from both the Andean area
and from the jungle as well.
It's a province that has both, an Amazonian and an Andean area
I come from that region and since I was a kid I learned
and lived with all that tradition surrounding me
I also speak Quechua because of my upbringing
for such reason I developed an interest in
ancestral medicine and the Andean culture
that still pervades throughout the centuries
-What are the main principles of your therapy?
The principles of ancestral medicine are the same
as those in Western medicine
Alongside with the body and it's system. There is an energetic system.
Throughout the body there are energies that heal
and when these energies are blocked the individual will start to get ill
When these energies are unblocked and they are allowed to flow
the body can resume it's healing process.
In a nutshell that's the principle
the core of ancestral medicine
-How do these "blockages" come about? What do you mean by that?
-blockages is when, besides our circulatory system, our blood flow
there are also energies that circulate through our bodies
and when the individual has problems these energy flows become interrupted
It's like a flow of water that has been blocked and some areas begin to flood while others have no water
this energetic imbalance predisposes the individual for illnesses
this is where our ancestral medicine works on
This is done with the aid of medicinal plants, thousands of which we have in Peru
plants that no only help heal physically but also spiritually by helping the natural energy flow run it's course
so both lines of medicine are worked on
-My name is Orlando Rocha and I would like to ask if you could give us an example
how is this done?
how do you reactivate these energy points in the body?
using medicinal plantas and something else to go along?
is there a particular way?
-It's very interesting. For example, lets take a stomach problem
let's say an ulcer. Ulcers have a physiological and psychological component
hence we work at both levels.
a gastrointestinal ulcer is associated with individuals who live under a lot of stress and fear
and of course certain bacteria that attack that part of the body. So there you have two levels.
so we need to work on both levels
another example could be a blockage due to an accident or a trauma in a body part
this could also generate energy blocks. We would then need to address it differently
different plants, massage therapy, etc. that can help the individual recover back to it's original status
This is what we do.
In case of depression our ancestral medicine has a totally different way of focusing
There are medicinal plants that unblock the points where the sadness is rooted
once the individual ingests these plants they are able to unblock this sadness
and once liberated the individual becomes more awake.
so the idea is not to hide or veil the sadness but to let it out and thus liberate the energy that's contained
The person then reconnects with the situation and works it out.
-What would be the difference between this ancestral medicine
and the Western medicine, which is based on placebos?
-there are several differences and there are some commonalities
but one of the main differences is that Western medicine focuses more on the symptoms
They group people according to their symptoms
We don't do that in such manner. Instead we have a technique which is called combing.
Let's say there are two individuals who suffer from depression
they both have the same symptom but the problem originated through very different ways
both individuals are treated oftentimes with very different resources and both recover
so we aren't dealing with a medicine where people are grouped by symptoms
instead the aim is to find what generated the symptom in each individual
That's one of the big differences compared to Western medicine
Another big difference is the energetic focus we spoke about already
and finally there's also an important difference and that's the fact that
for us who deal with ancestral medicine we work with an energy that we have
and thus we develop a system so that the person reconnects with this vital energy or force
this vital force is what allows the person to see a path of recovery
in which the person itself finds out the keys to its recovery
The individual is not passive in the process. He takes charge of his healing.
That is one of the most important differences
We don't have so much specialization although there is some
instead our goal is to help the individual comb through the variables that have induced the ilness
and that he takes charge of making the necessary changes needed for recovery
These variables can be psychological, physical or spiritual
Some variables can also be due to circumstances.
Therefore, it is a medicine that covers many aspects and whose goal is that
the individual reconciles himself with his status and take charge of them.
-Can you tell us where you plan on presenting this?
- I will be doing a presentation in la Casa Peru on Feb 2nd from 3:00 to 4:30PM
-Next Saturday - That's correct
- Located on 3040 Roswell Street , Los Angeles
- One more question: How recognized is ancestral medicine in Peru?
Is it respected and recognized?
-One of the problems in Latin America is that we tend to have double standards for some things
In my experience I notice that people value a lot the rocks that our ancestors left behind
but with respect the live culture that prevails throughout the centuries
there is a kind of shame and rejection and even banalization
It's a shame because this medicine is incredibly effective when it comes to dealing with addictions
Western medicine has shown very limited results when dealing with this type of cases
In Peru ancestral medicine is still valid among the people.
The people who live in areas where this medicine is available will make use of it before attending a hospital
but at the same time there is a lack of recognition from the part of the medical establishment
The situation arises where ancestral medicine is much more valued outside of Peru
But it is there and the people use it and have access to it just as they've being doing it for centuries.
-Very well, thanks a lot
