Are there any common complications with a tummy tuck procedure? When performed
by a competent plastic surgeon, a tummy tuck is a very safe operation. Occasionally, after
a tummy tuck, fluid can build up under the skin of the tummy. This is called a seroma.
This is not a dramatic complication, and the fluid itself can simply be drained by way
of a needle in the outpatient clinic when at your review. Sometimes the fluid will recur,
and then it can be simply drained again. Each time it recurs slightly less, until it doesn't
recur. Very rarely, the fluid continues to collect, and this may require further surgery
to completely correct. But this is extremely rare. There are occasionally wound healing
complications, and small areas of the incision can take a couple weeks to heal. Infection
is rare, but can occur. Occasionally, bleeding can occur under the skin flap, and that would
require a return to theatre to open the wound, wash out the blood, stop the bleeding, and
close up again. If this occurs, you'll be slightly more bruised, but it shouldn't affect
the end result. When performed by a competent plastic surgeon, a tummy tuck is a very safe
