Elizabeth fell silent and Mary was stunned – her cousin had just prophesied about her
son. Thoughts of what God had done for his people over hundreds of years filled her mind:
defeating proud rulers, using the humblest of people to fulfil his plans, turning the
world’s expectations upside-down. And then there was God’s promise to Abraham… She
started to turn her thoughts into a song of praise.
‘I will praise the Lord with all my heart. I rejoice because of my Saviour God. He cares
for me and people will call me blessed. The all-powerful Lord has done great things for
me. He is always merciful to those who worship him. He scatters the proud, but raises up
the humble. The Lord made his promise to Abraham and his family for ever!’
Mary stayed with Elizabeth for three months, until it was about time for Elizabeth to have
her baby. But she often thought back to the first day she arrived and Elizabeth’s prophecy.
Such wonderful words, such wonderful promises. Surely the Lord had truly blessed her. And
on the way home, her mind ran away with thoughts of her son, God’s Son. How would he save
God’s people?
