hi everyone thanks for tuning in to eZeLiving.com
you know a couple of webisodes ago I started a conversation with you on the
subject of sleep apnea
I experienced the symptoms but I decided to do the research
and then I checked in with BR Medical Suites
with Dr. Marc Mueller and we had a conversation
on this subject and here's what he had to say
a lot of people don't know the difference between snoring and sleep apnea
which is why I'm here Dr. Mueller
what should I be concerned about? look, i mean your sleep is disturbed obviously
and that is already not such a good sign
so if you wake up at night it's already a sign of sleep apnea
why is that so? it is actually the difference is
snoring makes just a sound like (....)
however sleep apnea is like this (...) and then you stop for a couple of seconds
and then you do this (...)
take a deep breath and you fall
into silent sleep maybe again
maybe some periods of snoring and then it repeats again
now you need to know a little bit more about sleep
during sleep you
are not always in the same sleep level
you're going step-by-step down to level 4 and to REM sleep level
and then again to sleep level 1 and the whole thing repeats
every one and a half hours
throughout the night. And there's a certain cycle that we should have it is
called sleep architecture
that should look all very nice
you know but if you are going to a
sleep level, let's say sleep level 3
where you're completely paralyzed and you stop breathing
you will come into a situation
the situation is you have no oxygen your carbon dioxide levels go high
your heart starts beating like crazy all your systems
are in an alarm stage your cortisol levels go up
and then at a certain stage your alarm bells in your brain ring
and wake you up to a higher sleep level
usually we are asking for something called
Epworth Sleepiness Scale there are questions like
do you fall asleep when you do your office work?
when you do some reading when you have to read a paper or so?
or do you even fall asleep when you are in a conference?
I've had patients that fell asleep during a conference it's really embarrassing
but they fell asleep in a board meeting
or if you are a driver
many many truck drivers
have this problem they fall asleep at the steering wheel
there are videos that show accidents that happen from that
there is a wide range
of severity of the sleep apnea syndrome
however we need to detect it because if you have
sleep apnea syndrome that could have an impact on your
not only on your life quality but also on your overall health
can it shorten life span?
exactly! you hit the nail on the head it can shorten your life span
and there are statistic that show or that
suppose that you'll might have a shorter life span of 5 to 10 years
if you have obstructive sleep apnea syndrome
what do you suggest I should do doctor?
go for sleep test and then we need to see how bad
your sleep results are and if it is
exceeding a certain level then we need to see which therapy...
I need to take the treatment
thank you very much for your time
my pleasure
so there you have it recommendations by doctor mark Mueller is that
I go in and check my myself to a hospital do some tests to see whether or not I have sleep apnea
