Hi! My name is Ernie, and I'm a student at the University
of North Florida, and I'm a major of psychology.
And uh, I'm here today because I'm going to talk about "Openbook"
which is an adaptive program used for blind people, which utilizes
a scanner to read documents - - typed documents.
And it can be anything from a school paper
to a bill that you get in the mail:
Um, you just stick it under your scanner and it will read it to you.
I was trained for this program by Denise in 2004.
And, uh, she's really helped me out with this a lot.
The program has been really helpful for me in utilizing school stuff,
personal stuff, and you know, you get it.
And now I'm going to do a brief demonstration of Openbook
and how it operates.
For right now I've got a typed document from school,
and I'm just going to stick this face-down into the scanner,
face-down... Now I'm going to go to Openbook
which is in my desktop, and I'm going to enter there.
And this is going to take it a few minutes to kick-in a little bit...
[ Computer speaks in between Ernie's talking... ]
Now I'm just going to press the SpaceBar to start the scan...
And this will take a few minutes... It makes a little "thump" noise...
It looks like it's already started scanning...
There it goes... [Computer voice reads text]
Ok, this is the document I just placed under the scanner
and it's reading it to me.
Now, if I just want to read the whole document
I go to the NUM-LOCK and I press ENTER... [Computer reads...]
and it just does the reading down for me.
Now if you want to stop it you just press the CONTROL bar,
and now if you just want to go line by line, use ARROW keys.
In order to read the previous line you press ARROW and UP.
Ok? And um... Now...
Now I want to save the document. So what I do is go to ALT+F4
and I close the document, and a dialog box comes up.
It asks you if you want to save the changes; I want to save it.
Ok, and you want to choose a name for the document,
so in this case I'll just say... this is uh, [ types out letters -]
"P-A-P-E-R - SPACE - ONE" Ok?
I titled it "Paper 1"...
Now it gives you a list of places to save it to, and I just
and I just save it to this..uh, what's it called...
...."Arkenston Docs", I'd save it there
and to save it I press ENTER,
and it makes that little music and that's all through saving.
And, like I said, this can be really helpful;
um, it's helped me out with school
and sometimes just letters I get in the mail like bills
and that kind of thing - I can stick it under there
using the scanner, and um,
Thank You!
