I am worried about the baby. Can I mix formula and breastmilk?
Why would you be worried?
A lot of moms say breast is best, and giving her anything else could cause food allergies
and *** confusion. But the doctor says she can have either one.
While humans evolved to drink breast milk, the Baby Boomers were raised on formula. Look
how they turned out.
Entitled? Spoiled?
Formula has all of the nutrients a baby needs. And today’s formula is better than what
kids consumed 40 years ago.
Is it safe to mix formula with breast milk? In one sitting, I mean.
It is fine to supplement poor breast milk flow with a bottle of formula afterward. Just
as it is fine if your husband gives the baby a bottle of juice in the middle of the night,
so you can sleep.
What about mixing it in the same feeding?
It isn’t going to hurt your baby if you mix breastmilk with formula in a bottle to
give her a full meal. It’s better than feeding her what you can, then lettering her caterwaul
until you’ve made more milk.
Is mixing formula and milk going to confuse her?
A little, perhaps. But she knows that the breast gives milk, while she’s figuring
out that other things are edible.
How’s that?
Babies pick up and put everything in their mouth. You’re worried about giving her formula
along with milk, when you should be worried about the lint and bugs she’s eating.
You don’t know she’s eating that.
She’s crawling along on the floor behind you, eating things like that. And now she’s
taste testing a shoe lace.
Oh, crap. Baby!
So don’t worry about mixing breast milk and formula. She’ll be eating way worse
stuff for the next year or so, including things you won’t discover until she poops and spits
it up.
