This is a criss-cross edging submitted by Patti Rosas.
As you see, it makes a very lovely edging for an afghan, baby blanket, placemat
or anything you'd like to use it on.
We're going to begin by uniting the A and B side a little differently.
I'm working on the B side with the B color.
I'm doing a
slip running stitch all around the edge just below
the B colored border.
I'm doing it around
each post.
I did the B post and now I'm doing the A post.
So now I'm working around the edge
and when you
are ready to unite them, you'll notice there's a chain two on the B side
and the A side will have a single loop edging.
We're going to use both sides.
I'm going to put my hook
----
under the first
two loops and do a slip stitch,
and then chain three for your first double crochet.
----
Under each of those two loops
make a double crochet.
Work around the edge.
The B side will have two loops you are working under.
Make three double crochets in the corner.
Again with the B color
work the same thing around the A side and, of course,
on this side you'll only have
the one loop to work under.
Work your double crochets all the way around and
three double crochets in the corner.
You'll end up with something that looks like this.
Now I'm going to unite both sides together.
With this one
you'll be working a single crochet around the edges.
I'm still working with the B color.
I go under the two top loops
of the A side and the two top loops of the B side.
We're just uniting it together
through the two top loops of each side
with a single crochet.
You'll notice it has created
a raised edging.
----
It's a little bit higher than normal.
----
When you have the completed edging,
you'll see the front and the back
look the same. You've got the double crochets and the single crochets.
Now to add the criss-cross.
Start with your B color.
Finish your single crochet
chain eight
and skip three - one, two three -
single crochets
and work a single crochet
with the B color.
Chain eight
and drop it to the back.
Attach your A color, skip one stitch after the B loop. You're always
going to leave one empty space or
one empty single crochet between the connections.
Join the A color through the back.
Chain eight,
skip one,
and join with a single crochet.
I've already done my eight here
----
I'm going to
skip one single crochet,
join it
with the single crochet and
chain eight.
one, two
three, four
five, six
seven, eight.
Drop it to the back.
I pick up my A color which I have already chained eight
----
Again, skip one and single crochet.
----
----
or join with a single crochet and
chain eight.
Drop it to the back.
Pick up the next color.
So you keep
criss-crossing colors
as you work.
Work all the way around.
When you get to the end with your B color,
join it into your first B
single crochet.
Then with your A color
bring it around the front and
join the A color to the front
of this first
----
A color single crochet.
You'll see that you have been crisscrossing all around.
----
It really does make a very lovely
edging when you use the two colors criss-crossing.
