Production in Chilean paper mills and pulp plants has stalled following the recent earthquake.
Water and electricity supplies have been knocked out in many of the larger plants whilst collapsed
bridges and closed shipping ports have disrupted transportation.
Antonio Maciel, president of Suzano Papel & Celulose said, "timber stocks in Chile
are at their lowest levels. With the stoppage of production in the country, the stocks go
down further and will pressure prices upward†. Wood pulp prices are also expected to rise
as Chile normally accounts for about 8 percent of global pulp production.
