>>Erik: What has humbled you most in your transition from music performance to stand
up comedy? >>Matt: Well there are nights you go out there
when it is not happening. There is a room full of people that are not turned on by what
you are saying and you know it. You have to work through it. That is humbling. It is failure
in your face and it`s your fault. It is what you are doing right now that is the problem.
You. The words that are coming out of your mouth are the problem. Your brain is causing
this situation. Oh, damn. There is no sugar coating it. There is no it is someone else`s
fault. It is a constant humbling. The hit rate on new material is better than it was
when I was beginning. It is still like being a good baseball player, you are still failing
70% of the time. Even if you hit .300 you are still going to be striking out sometimes.
Processing it, listening to it, but not succumbing to it. Knowing that these people this night
didn`t like me so change these couple words in this joke here and try it again tomorrow
night in another room and see if it works there.
