Hi, I'm Jay French, at Jay French Studios.com, and I'm going to show you how to draw Aang,
the Avatar. All right, to start with Aang the Avatar, we're just going to draw...'cause
there's, of course, you know, a thousand expressions we could do, but we just pretty much going
to do his face. And we're going to do the surprised smile face, or rather the excited
smile face. The very round head, nicely curved. His, his head, as it gets lower towards the
chin, narrows, and, fairly sharp, but a nice curve to the jaw. Fairly narrow, but curved
chin. Now something that is different about this than the anime that it is similar to,
is that it has a little more details in the nose. Now, there won't....they won't use a
whole lot of shading, but they will use more lines than your standard anime will. And,
we've got our big, excited smile. So usually a little off center. Make the lowest point
a little off from the middle, and, again, we've got some more detail and realism than
you'll see in anime style with this. Animation does use a combination of Western and Eastern
cartoon styles and with the classic Japanese style. Minimal shading on the mouth. And of
course, depending on his expression, his eyes can be totally different, but we're going
to do the big surprise, excitement. Now these lines are actually, the top and bottom lines
will be done with, if you're inking it, will be done in ink, whereas these side lines are
actually just a division between the flesh tone and the white of the eye. Now his eyes
will actually...his pupils and irises will change size depending on his expression. They
come across with more expression that way. When he's bashful or grim, and his eyes are
thin, his pupils are larger than his irises. When he's excited, which he often is, they
shrink into the....showing more white of the eye. He has a distinctive, thin to thick,
from the outside to the in, eyebrow. And, of course, we have the mark of the avatar,
which is that distinctive blue. And we have big ears, and...which have a little odd shape
to them, and a narrow neck. And that's how you get started with drawing Aang the Avatar.
