My name is Michelle Pinedo, I just recently graduated from the Cerritos College Teacher Trac Program
And I am currently attending Cal State Long Beach
My name is Bryan Valdez, I am 21 years old and I also graduated from the Teacher Trac Program along with Michelle Pinedo
You guys both talked about having difficulties with procrastination earlier,
tell me about what causes procrastination for you and how you get around it.
Well in high school I definetly didn't take things seriously, I was linking up to socialize for the wrong reasons.
But the procrastination came in to play because I just wasn't serious,
I wasn't engaged in any topic and if I wasn't engaged I would put it off because I don't care about it,
I didn't care about it, I don't have a drive to learn more or to understand more
I definetly overcame it when I decided to be a teacher and everything I do I feel there is an obvious reason to be doing it,
so what do you do when you are in the midst of classes, with an assignment due,
how do you find a way to become engaged, what happens if you are not engaged?
Well, if I am not engaged, and that is part of linking up too, it is always helpful when you link up with other people.
because you can try to engage eachother, and let's say I am not engaged in something because
I don't like the theme or something, I am not engaged, and someone else says, "Oh, but didn't you get this out of it?"
and you think, "oh I never thought of it like that." Because they have a different point of view on the topic or the theme
Maybe their point of view gives you a new idea and you start to see it this way now, so I am engaged.
so that linking up leads to those new possibilities, that new way of thinking,
and can suddenly engage you where you weren't engaged before
and once you become engaged you are not procrastinating as much.
Bryan you talked about Procastination too, what kind of problems have you had with it?
Well, kind of similar to hers, it all began during my high school years, especially during Junior and Senior year
because as we got closer to Senior Year we were like, "it's over" Senioritis
Yes, "Senior-itis" is what they call it. When I got to Cerritos in Fall of '06
I was doing the same thing, and it wasn't going well for me, the reason being was, let's say we have an essay due
for an English class, then you leave it for the last minute, how are you going to ask questions on the thesis if it is right
or, you can't just email a teacher one minute and expect a response from that teacher in the next minute.
If you are doing it at two in the morning and it is due at nine in the morning, then you are on your own.
and so you just rush through it.
What happened when you found yourself in that situation during the first semester?
I found myself in trouble because I wasn't getting good
grades as I am getting them now. (So what did you do to change?) I met up with people,
I went to counselors, I got help, how can I stay focused?
So linking up with people got you that motivation and got you that help
it got me engaged.
