The subject is diversified themes and ragas in Tyagaraja's compositions.
i have prepared a paper..
with 10 points..
that will give an idea of the diversified themes
and also the different categories of ragas
first item of the ten is
Tyagaraja's invocation to several dieties
Second will be Naada, NaadaVaishistya,
Naadopasana
Third is Sangeetha, Sangeetha Gynana,
Sangeetha Shastra Gyanana
Fourth is Tyagaraja's composition addressed to
his 'manas' or mind
i might not go in the order in which i have listed them
'at random' i will go..
and then tyagaraja's
compositions having some advice to humanity
and tyagaraja's compositions having episodic references
not epidemic..episodic..pls note
and then inferences
certain inferences he gives in his themes
i.e just to make us aware of the fact that
that he was not satisfied
with just valmiki's ramayana, he himself questions..
he frames the question..
epaniko janminchithinani..venchavaladu sriraama
asaveri raaga..
some such keertanas like that.
having inferences is having been an incarnation of
Valmiki.
and then..
Tyagaraja's composition in certain.
new..i dont say new 'melas'
certain melas which were not yet known to the
musical fraternity for eternity.
Kindly bear with me..
The paper is there with Dr Sunder
and anybody who desires of
having a copy of that..
can talk to him.
Now I will start the first item..
Tyagaraja's invocation to some dieties..
I will not be singing the compositions in full.
only the excerpts from the relevant compositions.
Bangala..
Bangala is a..
an ancient raaga..we can say
we can trace it to the 9th century
How the raga was handled..
has been made clear to us ony by Tyagaraja for the first time.
Oc course it is mentioned in the Sangraha Chudamani of Govinda
Giriraaja sutha thanaya..
Giriraajasutha tanaya
There is a wrong impression that
he gives reference to his grandfather..giriraja and all that
thats all wrong!
because 'ibaraaja mukha' ..
in anupallavi, 'ibaraaja mukha' comes..
Definitely, giriraaja has no 'ibaraaja mukha' {elephant face}
so it is giriraaja sutha..
a composition in praise of lord 'ganesha' in bangala
s r g m p m r p s, daivata varjya raaga
From which Mela it is janyam?
i can say..i can put it either under..
see because the daivata is 'varjya'..
{demonstrates} see the kakali nishada is there.
so it could safely be put only in
the 29th clan..
i call the mela a clan..
having chatusruti rishaba, antara gandhara, shuddha madhyama
panchama, chatusruti daivata, kakali nishada
This forms a clan..
that later on came to be known as 'mela'.
and given a name 'DheeraShankarabharana'
Now that is Bangala.
Tyagaraja hs got another composition
in Bangala.
Munupe Teliyaka Poyena?
The difference between these two are..
s r g m p m r p s
p m r p s. s n pm r g r..
That has been maintained in Giriraaja sutha tanaya
but in mumupe teliyaka..
it is the same scale format but rendered as a 'murchana'
not arohana and avorahana or scale format
It is murchana which is more predomninant in latter
I will demonstrate the second krithi now..
g m p m, s r g r..
Tyagaraja has played with these phrases with gusto
There is another composition in Bangala.
Sakshiledanuchu
I dont know it. I'm only 82. I am still to learn that composition.
In this raga, Tyagaraja has composed 3 compositions.
The next diety he has composed on is Lord Subramanya.
There are only 2 compositions of Tyagaraja on Subramanya.
As far as my knowledge goes..
Shadanana..Ni vanti Deivamu Shadanana. in Thodi
Now I'm going to sing one composition in SupraDeepam.
Supradeepam has got its history.
The nomenclature for the 17th clan was given as Supradeepam.
So the raga belongs only to the 17th , 18th centuries.
Tyagaraja took care..
to gift to certain ragas the music of humanity
through his compositions for the first time.
and in some case they are the only compositions
and no other composition has been struck by any other composer.
Supradeepam is one
Varashikhi Vahana..
Tyagaraja is a musicologist of outstanding repute ..we can say.
He has given the raga in the very first opening of the song.
In the ragas in which he has composed for the first time..
and perhaps theonly one..
of his compositions..
he has taken care to give the contour of a raaga
at the first stroke.
The janyas in the melas between 16 and 17..
chakravakam and suryakantham..
you have noticed some features..
slightly more than shuddha rishabha..
how many percent ..i don't know
the dominating daivatham will always be there..
in chakravakam and suryakantham
and their so called derivatives..so called janyas
i dont say it is a janya of that mela.
i say it could be allocated to the 18th clan 17th clan
so that is..supradeepam
to be found for the first time in the 18th or 19th century literature
composed for the first time
by Tyagaraja.
{sings arohanam} gandhara varjya
{sings avarohana} vakra sampoornam
ii'm only doing a stock taking..
im not exhausting..im not professing to exhaust all the ragas
