Welcome to SASHTO Scholarship 2014!
My name is Lena Highsmith and I am your 2014 SASHTO Coordinator. I will be explaining to
you how to prepare your 2014 SASHTO Scholarship Video Essay.
SASHTO funded scholarships are awarded each year to promote engineering education; however,
all eligible high school and college student are welcomed and encouraged to apply. This
year we have changed the application process for the scholarship by replacing the letters
of recommendation with the Video Essay.
What I will be doing over the next couple of minutes is explaining to you the guidelines
and instructions for what is expected for completing your Video Essay. The instructions
on how to upload your video essay will be provided in detail in the 2014 SASHTO Scholarship
Application.
Your Video Essay will be a minimum of 2 minutes and a maximum of 3 minutes long. As part of
the Video Essay, you will need to submit your video recording in a digital format so you
can record it using devices such as: web cam, smartphone, iPhone etc. If you decide to use
a smartphone or iPhone as your digital format when recording your video, please make sure
to position your phone horizontally for best video quality.
Your video presentation will require you to speak clearly and in detail, and cover the
following criteria in this order: 1) Introduction (please state clearly your
name, your age, your hometown, last school you attended, any hobbies, interests, sports,
and any extra-curricular activities) 2) Something unique about yourself
3) Your career objectives 4) Any outstanding achievements and awards
you have accomplished 5) Your educational aspirations
6) Any volunteer work you have participated in
7) Your short and long term career goals 8) Your strengths
9) Any self-improvement areas you see you need to work on
10) In your closing, please explain why you deserve the scholarship
Please practice recording your Video Essay as many times as you need before submitting
your final Video Essay of your choice. The final Video Essay should be the one you feel
will represent you best.
As you are preparing your Video Essay, if you have any technical problems or concerns,
please feel free to contact me at any time. Again, my name is Lena Highsmith and I can
