so let's
uh... go onto the first
uh... topic we have
which is: want is the difference between a blog and a website?
um...
Mary, do you kinda wanna
take this one away?
Ok, uh...
i feel that there is a pretty strong difference between a blog and a
website although things are changing so fast
and getting so mixed up and mashed together, sometimes it can be really
confusing
to me, a blog is almost like Facebook in many cases
it's lots on short quick information, opinion,
uh...
pictures and so on, and a website is more
long-lasting or stable.
I think of the website almost being like an old-fashioned
corporate brochure that has the basic
information about
you or your product or what you do
uh... but it doesn't change very often
and blog can change everyday or even more often than that
mhm, yeah, I would tend to agree
that websites are much more static, you know, that they were meant to
be there as reference
whereas blogs are specifically built for
giving new content and creating
new doors into your website
so it's a very different mentality
between a blog and a website.
I agree. One of the other uh... plusses about blog is if you have something that you want
to
uh... become established for in your industry
then
um having a blog gives you a chance to share content regularly
and keep people who are interested
a lot of times in the entertainment industry you have one performance, for instance, people
can forget about you easily within a month or later, but with a blog
you can give them more
frequent feedback of when your next performance is or what else is going on in your industry
yeah and another difference is uh...
when you're starting one
usually for websites you pay a designer or someone to build it for you
because they're kinda complicated and and when you think about making your own
website you go "oooh I don't think I can handle that."
uh...
a blog there's so many free softwares
that, um,
a lot of people feel free to just create a blot because you can do it
really easily, the software was meant to be user friendly
and you can get it completely for free.
There are some platforms where
uh... you do you have to pay for hosting. So, for instance,
Wordpress
is a favorite blog software and you can get a free *mess up* Wordpress
blog, but you can also take the Wordpress software and install it on a domain
that you're paying hosting for
and so then you, you would actually own your blog content and there's a lot more
customization
involved out when you install the Wordpress software on your own domain
so that you have a blog
on your domain. It's not somewhere else
uh... that is for free.
So, you kinda have a couple different options there
Do you wanna go with free,
or do you want to make it more customizable and um..
more
personal to you
yeah, so Opus Osm
is a Wordpress
uh...
product, template, whatever, um..
and I paid for hosting
so that's an example of what you were speaking about.
and yes
and I had a designer design the basic
template for, the basic design
and then I learned myself how to go in and change things, and play around
with things
and adapt it, re-adapt it, and redesign it as
I learned more
about what I want to say, what I want to do, and my audience
and add or take away things
that weren't quite right at the very beginning.
Yeah, same for me
Rachel Ann Poling is a Wordpress site.
I pay for the domain and hosting and the Wordpress software is installed
on it.
Since my website is primarily a blog
um... that really works well for me
uh.. I also am
I wouldn't call myself
a designer, but I am proficient in designing
so
I, um..
I've done everything myself and,
and have made many changes along the way. I actually started on Blogger and then
I moved to a free Wordpress site and then I moved to a self-hosted Wordpress site.
So I've done all three.
That, that's a good point, I think,
uh... if a person is
interested in
in having something or starting something, but a little bit unsure
maybe it's a good idea to start with the really simple blog
the most basic ones that you can find. Experiment with a little bit, get used to
the terminology, how fast things work, how slow things are,
keep it limited to a private audience
and then as you gain confidence and start to uh... know exactly what you like and don't
like and what you want, you can
switchover
to more complicated
types of blogs
The free Wordpress blog, if you're interested, is at Wordpress.com
As opposed to Wordpress.org. Sometimes that can be a little confusing.
For instance, if you wanted to see a Wordpress.com site, mine at
rosemariejames.wordpress.com uses the wordpress.com layout, the free version.
Yeah, that's one thing to note, when you
sign up for a free Wordpress blog it will be
whatever you call it will be, "www.
your name
.com.wordpress.com"
as opposed to if you have it installed on your own domain, it will just be
"www.
yourname.com"
*mixup* Go ahead,
like www.
opusosm.com. Indeed. Sorry.
No problem.
my personal recommendation if you want to start would be to start on Wordpress
because blogger doesn't have
uh... a way to go,
a way to expand.
Whereas, if you get a free Wordpress blog and you decide you want to do it
a little bit more intensivel, you know, you want to make the investment to pay for
hosting, moving to a
self-hosted Wordpress is way smoother of a transition than
blocker to self-hosted Wordpress because they're very very different
whereas, if you go from Wordpress to Wordpress, the controls are all the same, everything looks
the same, there's just a few more of them.
