Do you guys remember the episode Hey! Arnold
where Oskar the Czech guy
doesn't know how read, so they're trying to teach him how to read.
They drop him off in the middle of their city
and give him instructions, and he has to come home?
That was totally me earlier this week. I had my first day of teaching
first day of teaching on Tuesday. I got all ready for it. My boyfriend and I
I got all ready for it. My boyfriend and I went over
the route that I had to take on the bus, and you know, like a little bit of walking was involved.
walking was involved. It was supposed to take like, 30 minutes to get there.
So, I was supposed to be there at 2. I left here at 1,
I left here at 1, walked to the bus stop, got on the bus. Everything was perfect,
I knew where I was going. I was looking for my signs that I had to find and everything.
that I had to find and everything. And I get off,
it's like 1:45
and I'm just walking up to the building. I was like, "dang I'm kinda early.
I don't know, I feel uncomfortable...it's okay!" I get there, and it's completely empty and silent,
except for these 2 women. and I was like, "Hey! I'm Ellie!
I'm supposed to be teaching at 2." and they were just like,
"...what?"
I was like, "Oh no!" They were like, "Here?" I was like, "I think so."
And they were like, "You're probably supposed to be at the other school."
"You're probably supposed to be at the other school."
I was just like, "What?" So, there was a third woman who contacted me via email,
and we'd kind of been emailing back and forth and she gave me all the information.
So they called her, and they were like, "Hey! Is Ellie supposed to be teaching here at 2?"
And she was like, "Nooo! No no no no!"
"She's supposed to be at the other school!" and she's like, "I told you, I gave you directions, I sent you a map!"
I sent you a map!"
and I was like, "oooops." Because she did send me a map, that's true.
but I thought it was a map to this location
so I just didn't even look at it. So stupid.
And she was like, "You're not going to make it! You're not gunna make it! Just come in next week."
Just come in next week."
And the other lady was like, "You can totally make it!"
So, 15 minutes before my lesson, the two women who were there, who were super nice,
they like, wrote me a list, you know,
"Take any of these buses, this is the address of the school
this is the name of the school."
okay. I set out. I go to the
I go to the bus stop, see an old man get something stolen from him by a young dude who like runs away
stolen from him by a young dude who like runs away.
I was like, "ohh, should I chase him? I'm not gunna chase him. Sorry, old man."
I get on the bus. I had 2 tickets that my boyfriend got me before,
and I already used one of them, obviously, to get to that school, so I just like rode
so I just like rode without my ticket. FLASHBACK to
FLASHBACK to my first experience riding without a ticket. But nothing happened, thankfully.
It was just 2 stops. And the instructions they gave me was
"Ride the bus for 2 stops, get off, and turn right.
and the school is in a new housing development," they said.
And I get off the bus and I turn right,
and I turn right, and it's just apartment blocks... everywhere!
So I kind of just start walking, and I have my little piece of paper
and I have my little piece of paper with all the information. I was like, "I have no idea where I'm going."
So I come up on these two older ladies who are standing with a dog,
who are standing with a dog, just talking to each other, and I was just like, "Dzień dobry!"
And then, I had no idea what to say!
I just pulled out my little piece of paper, I was like, "Can you help me?"
I was like, "Can you help me?" And they were like, "Oh! Something something!"
looking at the paper, looking at the numbers and everything.
like, "Oh! Uhm, Straffe 1, something something..."
and they started arguing with each other
and they started arguing with each other about where the school is. "No no no! It's not that way!
"No no no! It's not that way!" They pointed in like 3 different directions
They pointed in like 3 different directions, like "Go here! Go there! Turn around!" And I was just like, "Uhhhh!"
And I was just like, "Uhhhh! Thank you! Do widzenia!"
but they did me a general direction to walk in. So, I went
So, I went on in the direction that they pointed me.
in the direction that they pointed me. and I came into this little, like, area
and I came into this little, like, area that had
that had, like a little grocery store and a salon, and there was a big sign that said like,
and there was a big sign that said like, "English School" or something like, "Angielski Something"
and I was like, "Is this it? and I'm looking at my little piece of paper,
and I'm looking at my little piece of paper, I was like, "Well it's not the same name, it's not the same address."
it's not the same address." And I was literally just standing outside
And I was literally just standing outside of this storefront basically and there were people
all over the place kind of like looking at me, and I'm just looking at this sign, like
and I'm just looking at this sign, like "Should I go in there? Ehhhh.... no."
And I kind of started walking again, and there was a man walking with a dog
I don't know why I feel like I need to talk to people wit dogs, but I do, aparently.
And I was like, "Czy... jestem..." and he kind of looks at my
and he kind of looks at my paper and he's like, "Something, something
"Something, something szkoła?" and I was like, "I know that word! and that's where I need to be!
That means 'school'!" "Szkoła! Tak! Tak tak tak!"
And he's like, something like, "That way... that way!"
And it was basically the same direction that I had been heading,
sort of. So, I'm going along, "Dziękuję!" Going...
Going... and I see-- you know, I'm looking at my paper...
that's the name of the school! and I go in, and there's a little woman, like behind a window,
I was like, "Excuse me! Do you speak English?"
And she's like, "What?" Noooo!
and I was like, "Am I here?" and she's like "Nope!"
and she's like "Nope!" "Go out the door,
"Go out the door, go straight, and turn right." I was like, "I really hope it's close." I had no idea what time it was.
I wasn't wearing my watch, my phone was dead. I was like, "I'm not taking the time to try to figure out what time it is!"
I'm just running!. And it was so hot, I was sweating
And it was so hot, I was sweating like a turkey on Thanksgiving, just sweating.
just sweating. I knew that my face was so red, I was so hot. Cause I was like. Truckin.
Finally! I was like, "This is it! This is the place!"
I'm looking at my paper - finally, oh thank goodness!
And I run in, I'm like-- and find the first woman, I was like,
"Do you speak English?" She's just like, "Mmm-mmm."
Show her my paper again.
"Jestem... lektcja... angielski."
and she's like, "Ohh! Of course you are!"
And she found me a woman who spoke English, I was like, "I'm supposed to be teaching
"I'm supposed to be teaching I don't know where to go."
This woman took me to the room and I was 4 minutes early
and I was 4 minutes early for my lesson.
