Hello! This is the animated news from the cruise industry this
week, April sixteenth, twenty eleven. (I'm not real, but the news
and our sponsor, Cruise News Daily, are.) OK. Here is the week's
news.
The top event of this week was Carnival's annual shareholder
meeting in Southampton. In a presentation for shareholders, we
saw just how strong financially the world's largest cruise
company is. We also learned that they are probably going to order
one more ship this year so that they will have two delivered in
twenty fourteen. We were reminded that Carnival generates so much
cash that they don't need to go into debt to buy new ships. They
pay for them in cash, and that's what helps them to be more
profitable than their competitors. There were interesting
handouts for the people attending, and we have a link to those on
the CND website.
Grand Princess went in for a three-week drydock in the Bahamas
this week. There will be many new features added to the ship, but
the most dramatic change will be the removal of the Skywalkers
Nightclub structure from the ship's stern. We have daily
videosfrom the shipyard posted on our blog. These behind the
scenes videos take a look at the work that was done each day. A
link is on the front page of the CND website.
Those are the top stories of the week. The complete detailed
stories and perspective on them were delivered to CND subscribers
daily via e-mail.
The daily e-mails this week also covered such stories as AIDA's
eighth ship, AIDAsol entering service this week in Germany, with
a spectacular christening in Kiel, to which the whole city was
invited. Forty-five thousand people came to the harbor to see a
free concert som of the country's top artists, the christening
and a giant fireworks show. We have a link to video of the event
on the front page of the CND website. AIDAsol is the ninety-ninth
ship in the Carnival fleet.
Carnival said they have decided that Carnival Breeze, when it is
delivered next year, will be the last of the Dream class.
President Gerry Cahill said the one that follows will be an
entirely new design. He didn't say when it would be ordered or
delivered or divulge if it would be larger or smaller than the
Dream class.
The Bermuda cruise season has opened, and already a passenger
aboard Explorer of the Seas was arrested for having marijuana in
his cabin. Passengers are reminded that they are subject to
arrest even if they haven't brought it ashore.
The nineteen-year-old being held in connection with a ***
assault on a young teen aboard Carnival Elation in March has been
denied bail on the basis that he is a threat to the community.
CND also covered more details of the story now that court
documents in the case have been unsealed and found that some of
the details that have been leaked in the local media have been
incorrect.
And Carnival Cruise Lines has a new mascot in the form of a giant
towel animal. The yet-to-be-named elephant will be appearing on
six of the line's ships, and he's already aboard Carnival Dream.

Those are the top stories of the week and other things you'll
want to know from the cruise industry. Our daily e-mails to
subscribers covered 16 stories about the cruise industry this
week. Headlines are on our website at www.cruise news daily.com.
I'll be back next week with more news from Cruise News Daily. So
long!
