There's temptation all around me. How do I keep the faith?
What makes something wrong or right?
It feels good when I do the right thing!
All of us face choices that are really tough, sometimes.
It could be something as simple as,
"Do I put the $20 or the $1 in the collection basket on Sunday?"
It could be as hard and complicated as, "Do I tell the truth at work, even though it may cost me my job?"
We're faced with choices that lead us to life and truth and love,
and we're faced with choices that make us turn in on ourselves and keep us safe and comfortable.
It's consoling to know that Jesus himself, the Son of God, was faced with those same temptations.
Temptation is not sin, but it's that inner thought that
maybe if I make this choice for 'me' this time, that's a good thing.
Jesus' life really has two moments of deep temptation.
The first is at the beginning, when He's in the desert, tempted by the devil.
The other is in the Garden of Gethsemane, right before the cross.
In both of those moments, Jesus is tempted to use his powers and to use His life,
not for the salvation of the world, but for his own benefit...
to save his own skin, in a sense.
What makes him choose the right thing is His identification with the Father...
Remembering who he is.
In both of those moments, He prays to the Father, and acknowledges that 'yes' He is the Son.
The same can be for us, then, when we're tempted to sin,
and when we're tempted to make that wrong choice.
That choice against truth and life; that choice against God and others; we remember who we are...
That we are children of God.
In those moments of testing and that moment of difficulty,
we can do the right thing because God is with us
and faith gives us the power to act in a good and holy way.
Knowing that it will lead us to the cross,
but knowing that the cross leads us to the resurrection and to life.
