Turkana, North Western Kenya
The people who live here have been affected by drought and flooding
I am vulnerable. Look at my home. I had no way to support myself
The Central Emergeny Response Fund (CERF) and the International
Organization for Migration (IOM) provided emergency assistance
I used to have cattle and camels. But we were raided by enemies.
The animals that survived died during drought.
Livestock is very important to the Turkana people, because it is
the main source of their livelihoods.
They depend on livestock for blood, for milk, for meat, and they also depend
on this livestock for cultural practices like paying dowry.
So without the livestock, there will be no life in Turkana.
Without livestock, you will face starvation,
you will face sickness, you will become worthless.
As a result of the drought in Turkana, the CERF project intervened
and brought the restocking of camels, two trained community animal health workers,
free CERF pasture development, drought resistant crops.
You see hope not only on the faces of these people,
but even in their lifetime you are able to see change,
you are able to read a life in their faces again.
