Hi, I'm Stan De Freitas, Mr. Green Thumb, for On Gardening. A plant that has a beautiful
heart-shape leaf is the Alocasias. Now, sometimes they're called Elephant Ears, and actually
Elephant Ears is usually a bigger variety of this particular plant. The Alocasias have
a nice pattern to their foliage. It kind of reminds you of a caladium, which is a second
cousin to. Alocasias have beautiful large leaves, kind of that Elephant Ear thing going
on, and of course they can be used in full sun to partial shade. Make sure you grow it
in a good peaty-type soil. This is one of those plants that often, I'll put a little
fine mulch around, as well. I've also found that good fish emulsion, or a good liquid
plant food about every two months, in a high light area is usually an additional benefit.
If it's in a real low light area, I might fertilize it every three or four months. Remember,
the more the light, the more fertilizer it's going to need, because it's building up more
energy, and it's going through more growth. Alacasias make a nice addition to the backyard.
They make a nice addition to a porch or patio, where you're looking for a nice foliage plant.
The alacasia is one you might remember. For On Gardening, I'm Stan De Freitas, Mr. Green
Thumb.
