The Affordable Care Act actually mandates that insurance companies provide preventive
screening services without co-pays, so a barrier for many people for getting colonoscopy and
then that the co-pay can be pretty prohibitive a couple of $100, which is not insignificant.
So now when you go and get your colonoscopy, you can get it without having to pay anything
out of pocket. There are a few exceptions to that. Medicare is still working on their
rules about whether or not people who have a colonoscopy can do it without co-pay, if
they find a polyp. So there are some subtleties, but in general, if you have insurance, you
should be able to get a screening service without a co-pay.
