Hi. My name is Trisha Strong
I’m the Clinical Manager of the Tri-Regional Blind-Low Vision Program with Child Development Programs.
The Blind-Low Vision Program is a provincial initiative funded by the Ministry of Children and Youth Services.
We’re administered by Markham Stouffville Hospital
and provide services in York and Durham Regions, the Counties of Peterborough,
Northumberland and Haliburton as well as the City of Kawartha Lakes.
Since we cover such a large geographic area
we have partnerships with Five Counties Children’s Centre in Peterborough,
Grandview Children’s Treatment Centre in Durham,
Canadian National Institute for the Blind and
Surrey Place Centre in order to support families with skilled professionals close to home.
The Blind Low Vision Program is designed to give children
who are born blind or with low vision, the best possible start in life.
If your child has been diagnosed with blindness
or low vision that can’t be corrected with lenses, contact us to make a referral.
We have Early Childhood Vision Consultants
who provide in-depth functional vision assessments as well as intervention services.
The Tri-Regional Blind Low Vision Program also provides family support, education,
and consultation to other providers who may be a part of your child’s developmental team.
As a family member, you’re the most important person on your child’s team,
we encourage you to ask questions along the way,
use our website to find additional resources such as vision milestones
and to let us know if you would like to connect
with other families who are currently enrolled in our program or have been enrolled in the past.
If you have a young baby, it’s recommended that vision be tested by 6 months of age.
Even at this young age, the health of the eye can be examined.
If you have concerns about your child’s vision, talk to your doctor right away.
Early identification is key to early intervention and support.
Thanks for your time today and for your interest in the Tri-Regional Blind Low Vision Program.
