Before watching this video
it is necessary that you look carefully at the other video where we explain
the importance of having the male
and female pet ferrets neutered.
After you have seen
this video, then
you can watch this one.
In that video we explain the advantages of neutering, but there also
exists a serious problem
when the neutering
is not done in a responsible manner.
I want to explain the inconvenience of neutering this pet,
even though I also want to explain
how to solve this problem that only happens in a small amount
of neutered ferrets.
This is a very simple drawing, anyway I'm
very bad at drawing, but here you will see
exactly all the organs that are involved in the development process
of the adrenal illness.
in the physiological mechanism, in other words, the normal mechanism
where
the activation of the ferret rut occurs, the first thing that starts to get involved is
the brain,
I've drawn it here,
very schematic
I will mark it,
this is the
brain. In spring
the brain gathers all the possible information when it realizes that the days get warmer
and longer, and the temperatures start
to get hotter, and
it prepares the ferret for
the reproduction.
How does it happen? The brain
sends a hormone to the bloodstream
that goes directly
to the *** organs.
***
organs.
And wakes them up,
in other words, prepares the animal for reproduction, makes the testicles
grow in the case of the male,
and the ovaries and uterus grow in the female.
So they sort of say "its breeding time",
What happens then when
we have neutered pets?
Lets suppose that there are
no *** organs,
because we have removed them surgically,
and when these brain hormones
touch the target,
as they cannot find ovaries or testicles,
they activate
the adrenal glands. These small glands are
like small buttons
that are next to the kidneys.
This is the kidney,
this would be the left kidney, as its a drawing done belly up, and this
would be the right
kidney.
There also exists a a left adrenal gland,
This is the left adrenal gland
and here is the right adrenal gland.
When the brain sends the activation message to these adrenal glands
in spring
these
grow exactly the same as the *** organs do,
these wake up.
During the first, second and even the third year
you can't see any pathology,
what I mean, is that the glands get bigger
all you can see during the rut season is a bit of bareness on
the tail, this is called rat tail
and you can see on it
the pathology that we call black spots,
but this is completely reversible, becuase when
its winter again, the glands go back
to their normal size.
Only a very small percent of ferrets
especially with the passing of time
this activation of the adrenal glands
can become a problem
because they don't shrink any more, they remain active forever
and leaves the animal completely hairless.
This problem for this small percent of ferrets,
is an illness and is called
adrenal illness,
but, it has a solution,
that must always be preventive, because when it is
activated
it is very difficult to revert it, even many times
the only way to revert this problem is surgically, in other words, we would have to eliminate
the adrenal glands. We don't
have to reach this drastic point,
There exists
quite a few medical options
which are giving the animal
hormone administration
that will stop
the brain sending the
instruction
to activate both the adrenal glands and the *** organs,
they are really
neutralizers,
it is a technique that we call chemical castration,
in other words, they are hormones
that stop
the brain
from sending the reproduction signal
to the animal
and this way we avoid this
activation and adrenal illness. It is very easy, you can ask any veterinary that is especialized
in ferrets, they will also give you this option and its very comfortable,
because it has to be done only once a year.
There are different opinions
when it comes to decide which is the best moment to
neuter ferrets.
Years ago, it was thought that this adrenal illness problem
happened
because the animals were neutered when they were too young,
around one or two months old,
as they did it those days in the United States.
Nowadays, it is known that
the development of the adrenal illness has
nothing to do with the moment the animal is neutered, it doesn't matter
if we neuter the animal when its one month old, two, five or one year old.
because every spring of their life
this *** mechanism the brain sends,
will happen.
Even if these hormones that we give the animal,
interrupt the glands or the *** organs
activation, these do not interfere at all when it comes to
the moment that the brain detects if the ferret is living in the summer or winter season.
Therefore, these are completely recommendable and are the
solution to this problem.
But as I know that you will have a lot of doubts and questions, there you have our
facebook and our web so you can ask us everything you need.
