Why are dental implants preferred over bridges? Video brought to you by Scottsdale Cosmetic

Evidence is overwhelming in favor of dental implants versus bridge treatment. The success
rate of trouble-free implants is currently averaging 92% to 98%.
Dental Implants protect your remaining natural teeth. With conventional bridgework, teeth
adjacent to the missing tooth must be reduced down even if they have no current problems
to act as an anchor support to hold the bridge. Unlike dental bridges, dental implants do
not compromise surrounding natural teeth since they stand alone to hold the implant crown.
In the process of installing the bridge it could damage an existing tooth. Dental implants
are inserted without affecting adjacent teeth. In addition, by inserting a dental implant
you do not need to shave down any existing teeth.
Dental implants can replace a series of missing teeth as well as posterior molars when there
are no adjacent anchor supporting teeth. A conventional dental bridge is dependent on
support from adjacent teeth and will require healthy, strong surrounding teeth.
Dental Implants provide long-term restorative treatment. Bridgework and dentures may need
to be replaced every ten to fifteen years, but dental implants normally will last a lifetime
with proper care. If the the crown on the dental implant needs replaced, it can easily
replaced.
Problems with bridges come from tooth decay and gum disease on the teeth supporting the
bridge. If one tooth has a problem, the whole structure is compromised and needs replacement.
There is no periodontal disease with implants, there is no decay. There is no decay of the
underlying tooth structure with dental implants since they are made of metal and porcelain,
there will never be a need for root canal treatment. Once either abutment tooth of a
bridge develops decay the entire bridge, which is at least three crowns, must be replaced.
Often the abutment tooth will also need more treatment such as a pulp cap, core build up,
crown lengthening or root canal therapy.
Your bone is better preserved. With a fixed bridge or removable partial denture, the bone
that previously surrounded the tooth root may begin to deteriorate. Dental implants
integrate with your jawbone, helping to keep the bone healthy and intact. Unlike conventional
bridgework, implants stimulate bone growth and help preserve oral health due to constant
biting action or exercising of the jaw bone.
When teeth are missing the surrounding bone begins to shrink. Dental implants can help
to maintain the shape and structure of the jaw bone . Most implants preserve the underlying
jawbone and therefore preserve the overlying facial structures, preventing the shape and
facial structures from collapsing. Bone beneath bridges can lead to a collapsed, unattractive
smile.
Dental implants are strong. Dental implants are made from titanium and are strong as well
as being able to perform the same functions as a natural tooth. The major component of
the implant is titanium and there is no documented evidence of adverse reaction to this durable
material. Research clearly shows there are also no long-term complications.
Bridges can move around in the mouth and reduce your ability to eat certain foods. Dental
implants function like your own teeth, allowing you to eat your favorite foods with confidence
and without pain.
In general, dental implants are much easier to clean and maintain than bridgework, implants
also allow easier access between teeth, improving oral hygiene.
